to drive to the left of the center of such highway, provided the same <br /> is done with due care and right of way is extended to vehicles <br /> traveling in the proper direction upon the unobstructed portion of <br /> the public highway. <br /> Section 81: APPROACHING VEHICLES - LIGHTS TO BE DEPRESSED. <br /> Whenever any person operating any vehicle shall meet or approach a <br /> vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, such person shall <br /> reasonably turn and drive such vehicle as far to the right of the <br /> center of such highway as practicable. Whenever any person operating <br /> any vehicle during hours of darkness shall approach a vehicle <br /> traveling in the opposite direction within a distance of five hundred <br /> ( 500) feet, such operator shall cause the high intensity beam of the <br /> headlights upon the vehicle he is operating to be depressed to the <br /> lower elevation, as provided by law, or, in the event that such <br /> vehicle is not re uired under the provisions of the vashington votor <br /> Vehicle Act to be provided with a lower elevation of light, then, <br /> under the circumstances herein set out, the high intensity beam of <br /> the headlamps upon such vehicle shall be dimmed, in lieu of being <br /> depressed to a lower elevation. <br /> Section 82: OVERTAKING VEHICLES - VIEW AHEAD AND SIGNALS <br /> REQUIRED. Any person driving a vehicle and overtaking another <br /> vehicle driving in the same direction shall pass to the left of such <br /> overtaken vehicle: Provided, that it shall be unlawful for any <br /> person to pass any vehicle overtaken, unless he shall have a clear <br /> and unobstructed view ahead for a distance sufficient for safe pas- <br /> ' sing, all factors considered. Any person driving a vehicle and <br /> being overtaken by any vehicle proceeding in the same direction <br /> shall keep to the extreme right-hand side of such public highway and <br /> shall not accelerate his speed until the overtaking vehicle shall <br /> have resumed a driving position and speed ahead of him. The over- <br /> taking vehicle shall drive clear of the overtaken vehicle and shall <br /> continue its overtaking speed until it has passed the overtaken <br /> vehicle and shall have resumed its driving position to the right of <br /> such public highway. No person driving any vehicle shall overtake <br /> another vehicle for the purpose of passing, without first signaling <br /> his intention to pass by the use of the horn or other sounding <br /> devices. <br /> Section 83: PASSING PROHIBITED IN CONGESTED TRAFFIC. <br /> It shall be unlawful for the driver of any vehicle when in line of <br /> traffic during congestion to overtake and pass another vehicle <br /> unless able to immediately regain a position within such line of <br /> traffic. <br /> Section 84: PASS ON RIGHT WHEN VEHICLE MAKING LEFT TURN. <br /> The operator of a vehicle may overtake and pass another vehicle <br /> proceeding in the same direction on the righthand side of such <br /> overtaken vehicle, when such overtaken vehicle is making, or the <br /> operator thereof has signaled his intention to make, a left turn: <br /> Provided, such passing to the right may be done safely in the exercise <br /> of due caution and upon the proper driving portion of the roadway. <br /> Section 85: PASSING IN INTERSECTIONS PROHIBITED. No <br /> vehicle shall overtake and pass or attempt to pass another vehiclD <br /> at an intersection except by direction of a peace officer or as <br /> permitted by section 84 hereof. <br /> -29- <br />
