The response states that the zero-clearance insulation is not required due to the steel stud wall
construction per the Hood Plan on Sheet M1. Please note the following
a. It appears that this wall is new construction, which requires a building permit application. The
building permit must be submitted and approved prior to issuing the mechanical permit.
The updated drawings now show the stainless steel fire wall is to be built per building permit
application B2103-046 which will be submitted by others.
b. The excerpted NFPA language provided in the response letter does not appear consistent with
Section 4.2.3 in the current edition of NFPA 96. In addition, the cited method specifically
relates to"limited combustible materials"which is defined in Section 3.3. The omission of the
zero-clearance insulation in the hood is only permitted if the appropriate wall construction is
provided for a minimum of 18 inches. Otherwise, insulation or a minimum 18-inch clearance
is required as stated in the original comment.
There will be a stainless steel fire wall built, per building permit B2103-046, that will extend a
minimum 18" in all directions of the proposed vent hood.
Architectural
5. The revised design includes construction of an independent gravity load framing. A separate
building permit application is required for the structural work. The building permit must be
submitted and approved prior to issuing the mechanical permit.
All architectural/structural items to be addressed in submittal documents in building permit
application B2103-046.
6. The following comments should be addressed for the new beams supporting the mechanical units:
a. The new beam framing is intended to support only the mechanical units per Detail A/S2.
However, the beams and walls do not appear to be provided with structural gaps to prevent
loading of the beams by the roof due to deflections (e.g., snow load, etc.). The new framing
should be vertically independent, including at the roof sheathing.
All architectural/structural items to be addressed in submittal documents in building permit
application B2103-046.
I 2_
