Mr.Drew Martin • •
City of Everett Planning and Public Works
March 12,2019
File No.262018.055
Page 3
condition, the FRP is designated as a bidder-designed element with criteria
provided and a design submittal is expected from the supplier.
6. Continuing with the previous comment, the"Design Strength"paragraph in the
"Renovation" section of the General Structural Notes on Sheet SO.0 states that the
FRP system shall be designed for the "total strength and confinement"
requirements specified in the drawings. Performance and load requirements for the
design of the FRP repairs do not appear to be provided. The structural drawings
shall be revised to specify the required criteria. The mechanism(s) for each load
shall be specified (e.g., column compression, corbel moments, girder shear,
prestressed endzone anchorage, etc.). See IBC Section 1603.1.8.
Response: Details on Sheets S.10 and S.11 have been revised to include
performance and load requirement for the design of FRP repairs.
Requirements are indicated in terms of equivalent rebar reinforcing.
7. Detail 19/S.10 (Revised Detail 14/S.10) specifies a minimum repair length of 4'-6"
from the girder end, which must wrap around the bottom of the girder per Detail
14/S.10 (revised Detail 1 S/S.10). The girder bearing connection prevents wrapping
the beam underside for at least one-half of the corbel depth. Verify the required
length of the repair. See IBC Section 107.2.1.
Response: The intent of the detail was for the wrap to occur on the side of the
beam and corbel only, and not extend into the bearing surfaces. Detail 14/S1.0
has been revised to clarify this and to clearly exclude FRP wrap on girder at
the corbel.
8. Detail 18/S.10 (Revised Detail 8/S.10) specifies repair of the embedded bearing
plates in the deck girder ends. The repair appears to require removal of concrete
between the girder end and the plate, which may induce unintended stresses in the
plate (e.g., flexure, pryout loads on embedded elements, etc.). See IBC Sections
1603.1, 1604.1, and 1604.4. The following comments shall be addressed:
a. Calculations shall be submitted substantiating that the temporary construction
condition of the bearing assembly is adequate for the proposed repair. Detail
18/S.10 (Revised Detail 8/S.10) shall be revised to specify the maximum
amount of material that may be removed without destabilizing the assembly.
b. Alternatively, details for a shoring system shall be specified in the structural
drawings; calculations substantiating the system shall be provided. Where the
temporary shoring is deferred for design by the contractor, the shoring system
shall be included in the list of Deferred Submittals on Sheet SO.0;performance
requirements shall be specified per IBC Section 1603.1.8.
S I 5 Reid iddleton
