Every oil burner shall be designed, installed and
maintained so as to prevent any oil particles from impinging
and burning directly on any steam or water boilers or other
metal heating surface of a heating system subject to pressure.
Section 10: Every oil burner used in connection with
water, steam or warm air heating systems, or in any stove, range
or heater, shall be provided with an approved automatic shut-off
that will effectively and quickly stop the flow of oil from the
storage or supply tank to the fire box in case the burner flame
should be extinguished or oil should accumulate in the fire box.
Every oil burner shall be provided with an oil shut-off
valve installed near the burner.
Where oil regulating valves are used in connection wit •
oil burners, they shall be of approved type , provided with a
stuffing box of liberal size, containing a removal cupped gland
designed to compress the packing against the valve stem and
arranged so as to facilitate removal. The valves shall be
designed to close against oil supply and to prevent withdrawal
of steam by continued operation of the hand wheel or handhold.
The use of packing affected by the oil fuel is prohibited.
Section 11: Every automatic oil burner used in
connection with hot water, steam orvarm air heating systems
shall be equipped with an automatic device to reduce or
extinguish the fire in event of undue pressure or over-heating
within the boiler or furnace.
Oil burners subject to automatic ignition shall be
provided with a permanent automatic device , so designed that
all oil upon being turned into the combustion chamber, will
quickly become ignited or shut off.
All automatic devices shall be constructed of proper
strength and materials to minimize the liability to failure,
breakage or other accident or injury, and every automatic
controlling or protective device shall be provided with sub-
stantial means for manually testing same to ascertain its
proper operating condition.
Section 12: Burners containing chambers which allow
a dangerous accumulation of gases, or containing oil conveying
pipes or parts subject to intense heat, are prohibited.
Burners shall be designed so that they can be easily
cleaned and so as to minimize the possibility of oil leakage.
-9-
