See revised sheet A-2.0-A2.5
9. The stairways and landings in the Type I portion of the building should be constructed of
non-combustible construction.Section 1011.7 Response: We propose that Stair A remains
wood as it extends through the IA portion of the building. We feel that the purpose of a shaft is
to confine a fire to the floor of origin and to prevent the fire or the products of fire from
spreading to other levels. It is our understanding that the code is moving in this direction and the
next round of code revisions will incorporate this opinion into the base code. Graphics have
been improved and notes added to indicate that the remaining stairs in type IA construction are to
be pre-engineered metal stairs or cast concrete. See revised details sheet A-7.2.
10.The exit passageway portion of Stair B should be shown with 90-minute doors (101, 102 &
114) and minimum two-hour walls(wall type C-2-2 is not a two-hour rated wall due to the
one-hour partition on top of the CMU).Section 1023.3 Response: See the revised Sheet Door
Schedule sheet A-2.7. Wall type C2-2 is a 4 hour rated wall. Wall type M-1-l has been revised
to indicate a 2 hour rating. See revised sheet A-2.2 and A-9.0.
11.The lower handrail extensions should be shown to extend a minimum of one tread depth at
the same angle as the handrails on Sheets L4.02 & A-7.2 (vs.horizontal like the upper
extensions).Section 1014.6 See the revised sheet A-7.0 through A-7.3.
