Mr. Art Skotdal
Skotdal Real Estate
Plan Check Number: B1906-031, First Building Review - Structural
August 26, 2019
Lateral System:
36.The lateral analysis has been performed using a finite element model (FEM). The analysis
appears to have been performed using the modal response spectrum analysis of ASCE 7-10
Section 12.9. See IBC 1613.1 and ASCE 7-10 Section 12.7.3. The following documentation
should be submitted for review:
a. Plans and elevations showing the general model geometry construction. Isometric views
are also recommended. Elevations and dimensions are recommended to verify the model is
consistent with the structural drawings.
b. Plans and elevations indicating framing and wall identifications and sizes, framing end
releases and rigidity offsets, joint panel zone assignments, external joint restraints (e.g.,
pinned and fixed connections, springs including values, etc.), and other such information
essential to the model construction. Do not submit automatic FEM input files listing framing
and joint definitions as this information is voluminous and does not provide the requested
information to verify the FEM construction.
c. Rigid and semi-rigid diaphragm definitions.
d. Input data specifying material property definitions. Definitions shall verify if both weight
and mass properties are non-zero. Concrete material definitions shall include cracked
section modifiers.
e. Section definitions for user-defined elements including framing, wall piers and spandrels,
floor areas, and panel zones. Definitions shall include material property assignments.
f. Plans and elevations showing area, line, and joint load assignments. The documentation
shall show variable loading and spatial distribution of loads as occurs. The type, magnitude,
and units of the loads shall be specified. Input data for live load reductions per IBC Section
1607.10 shall be included when considered in the design.
g. The design includes concrete shear walls with intersecting boundary elements. The load
combinations shall include orthogonal loading per ASCE 7-10 Section 12.5.4.
h. Seismic participating mass definitions, calculated building masses, and modal analysis load
cases.
i. Modal-response output showing the building periods and associated participating mass. The
combined modal participating mass for each of the lateral, overturning, and torsional
responses shall satisfy the minimum 90% threshold per ASCE 7-10 Section 12.9.2.
j. Calculation of scaling factors for seismic loads, including scaling modal base shear to a
minimum of 85% of the ELFP per ASCE 7-10 Section 12.9.4.1. The scaling factors shall be
included in the applicable seismic load case definitions. Scaling factors should match
seismic load case input files.
37.The structural calculations do not include the design of the concrete shear walls. Calculations
substantiating the wall design shall be submitted for review.
