•
Mr. Art Skotdal 4
Skotdal Real Estate
Plan Check Number: PW1907-055, First Building Review - Shoring
August 2, 2019
2. Section 4/SS4.0 "Soil Parameters at Vertical Elements"appears to provide design criteria for the
design of cantilever soldier pile walls. The criteria is not included in the recommendations of
the geotechnical report. The project does not appear to include any walls systems consistent
with this section. The structural engineer shall obtain supplemental recommendations from the
geotechnical engineer for the proposed design criteria. The application of the criteria in the
design shall be clarified. Alternatively, the figure shall be removed from the construction
drawings. See IBC Section 107.2.1 and 1803.6 Item 7.
3. Structural and geotechnical special inspections are required for this project. Sheet SS1.0
includes a statement for special inspections under Section 00405. The statement is incomplete.
The statement shall be revised to specify the extent of each inspection (e.g., continuous,
periodic). The table should be revised by adding additional inspections, including but not
limited to: geotechnical inspections, concrete reinforcement, placement of shotcrete, placement
of structural steel, welding of structural steel, and installation and load testing of the soil nail
anchors. Note that the installation and testing requires for the soil anchors do not constitute
observation of the work by a special inspector, and therefore this work shall be included in the
special inspection requirements. See IBC 1704.3.1 and 1705.2.1, and Tables 1705.3, 1705.6,
and 1705.7.
4. The project includes steel construction. The Structural Notes for the shoring system shall be
revised by adding a section specifying the requirements for steel construction. The
requirements should include but are not limited to: steel grades including plates, anchors, and
connection hardware, welding materials, protective coatings, and special inspection
requirements for steel fabrication shops. Note that Structural Notes provided for the building
construction shall not be considered to satisfy this requirement. See IBC Sections 107.2.1,
1704.2.5 and 2205.1, AISC 360-10 Sections A.4 and B3.13, and AISC 303-10 Section 3.1.
5. The project includes reinforced concrete (i.e., shotcrete) construction. The Structural Notes for
the shoring system shall be revised by adding a section specifying the requirements for steel
construction. The requirements should include but are not limited to: steel grades, minimum
laps, protective coatings, and special inspection requirements for reinforcement fabrication
shops. Note that Structural Notes provided for the building construction shall not be considered
to satisfy this requirement. See IBC Sections 107.2.1, 1704.2.5, and 1901.5.
6. Page 19 of the structural calculations provides a punching shear capacity analysis for the
bearing plates at the shotcrete facing. The capacities appear to be determined using allowable
stress design (ASD) methods. The punching shear for the plates is a strength limit state per
FHWA NHI 14-007 Section 5.5.2. Revised strength capacities for the plates shall be submitted.
The capacities shall include the resistance factors per Table 5.10. See IBC Sections 104.11 and
1604.2.
7.
