5. Only one person is allowed on any type of ladder at a time. <br />6. Do not place a ladder in front of doors opening toward the ladder except when the door is <br />UDcked open,locked or guarded. <br />7. Do not place ladders on boxes, barrels, or other unstable bases to obtain additional height. <br />8. Face the ladder when ascending or descending and grasp the ladder with both hands. <br />9. Do not use the top two steps of ordinary stepladders as a step or stand. <br />10. Do not use a stepladder as a straight ladder. <br />11. When portals rung ladders are used to gain access to elevated platforms, decks, etc. The <br />ladder must always extend at least 3 feet above the elevated surface. t is required that when <br />portable rung ladders are used, the base must be so placed that slipping will not occur, unless it <br />is lashed or otherwise held in place. <br />Slip and Fall Prevention <br />1. Wear proper footwear for thejob and the environment. <br />2. Replace worn equipment; repairworn surfaces. <br />3. Mop up spills immediately. <br />4. Maintain adequate lighting. <br />5. Throw salt on icy walking surfaces and wipe up of y spills with adsorbent pads. <br />6. Never store materials on stairs or in companionways; pick-up immediately small tems like <br />bolts or machine parts that could cause someone to fall. <br />7. Make sure all cords and hoses are neatly stowed after each use. <br />Hatches <br />Often on ships undergoing repair, hatches are open, deck plating is removed and floor holes exist. <br />When working on ships, it is extremely important to pay close attention to the integrity of walking <br />surfaces. <br />1. Never talk on a cell phone while moving around on a ship. <br />2. Do not carry bads that obscure your vision of surface you are walking on to the extent that you <br />cannot see hazards in front of you. <br />3. Install handrails immediately after opening any hatch with a coaming of less than 24" above <br />the walking surface. <br />4. Do not allow debris or other tripping hazards to collect near open hatches. <br />5. Do not run electrical cords or hoses on thewalking surfaces around hatches. <br />Cranes <br />1. Do not walk under crane bads. At no time are loads to be carried over people. <br />2. Hardhats are requiredwhen working around an operating crane, orwhen there are any <br />overhead loads. <br />3. Never put your hand between the bad and a sling. <br />4. Make sure the load is secure and well balanced before raising the load more than a few <br />inches. <br />5. The crane rope must always be equipped with a safety hook. <br />6. Use a tag linewhenever a load needs continuous guidance or is likelyto swing. <br />7. Never use damaged or defective slings. Inspect slings prior to use. <br />8. Pad or protect slings from any sharp edges on the load. <br />9. All manufactured slings must have a legible load -rating tag. Discard all manufactured slings <br />with wear threads showing. <br />
