LONGITUDE
ONE I WENT Y'
ENGINEERING&DESIGN
6.) See Detail 14 on Sheet SD-2. It appears that the new RB-1 beam has a tapered end with a 0-inch
depth at the end of the taper. Calculations should be updated to reflect the detail or detail
should be updated.Adjustments to strength should be taken into consideration. Note that the
current calculations do not include the dead load from the ceiling framing.
Response: Beam has been tapered at end for aesthetics per arch. The beam performs as a
cantilever section at tapered end with perpendicular joists @ 16" o.c. across the beam. The last
joist can be conservatively assumed that it will be placed at 16"from end of 0in depth cantilever.
If beam has constant slope from 18" to 0" over a 48" long cantilever, then at 16"from end, beam
depth will be 12".
Based on limitations of software, tapered end analysis is not permitted. However, an isolated
analysis at the cantilever end with a 12" deep section and uniform loading, is a conservative and
similar analysis method. Thus, please reference revised RB-1 calculations.
7.) Continuing with the previous comment, it is not clear if the connection from the 2x bracing is to
the roof rafters or 2x ridge board. Provide additional details showing the connection, length of
braces, and height from the ceiling to roof. Provide calculations substantiating the design.
Response: Detail 14/sd-2 5„L,vs that Li ie 2x bracing ,s to be •..onnected to the rafters with 10d toe
nails at each brace end. Additional note stating max length of braces to be 5ft max (per site
conditions) has been added. Detail already shows max brace span of 5ft. Detail shows sufficient
information for construction.
8.) Continuing with the previous comment, calculations should be submitted for review of the
existing 2x ridge board. It appears the 2x ridge board is spanning 60 inches due to the spacing
of the bracing.
Response:2x braces shall be no more than 5ft long. Similarly the ridge board is shown as 5ft max
with 5ft of tributary area. As noted in updated attached calculations, all members are sufficient.
9.) See Sheet S-5. Plans should provide a detail for Beam RB-3.The notes on the plans are not
clear. R106.1.1
Response:Note specified at beam RB-3 is sufficient for construction. The note states that the beam
shall be located above the roof joists, but below the rafters(essentially within the attic space). The
ceiling joists (running perpendicular) are then to be hung from the new beam with H2.5A clips at
each joists as it runs past the new LVL. If upon discovery during the remodel, it is found that there
are existing braces in the way of the new LVL, the braces are to be relocated above the LVL
(instead of on the existing ceiling joists). New LVL beam will have diagonal kickers at end supports
to help brace/stabilize the member. If conditions are different in the field, then an RFI letter will be
issued with an alternate solution as required.
