Program Objectives <br /> <br />1. Define the Advisory Role: Clarify the scope, responsibilities, and impact of an advisory <br />role as a volunteer with the City of Everett. <br />2. Enhance Engagement Skills: Provide tools and frameworks to effectively engage in <br />conversations that prioritize relationships, trust, and understanding, rooted in the <br />principles of A.L.O.H.A. <br />3. Strengthen Feedback Mechanisms: Develop strategies to deliver meaningful and <br />actionable feedback to the city, police, and stakeholders, guided by A.L.O.H.A. <br />4. Foster Relationship-Centered Approaches: Encourage practices that prioritize <br />relationship-building and community partnership, integrating the values of Kuleana, <br />Pono, Lōkahi, and Pilina. <br /> <br /> <br />Program Structure <br /> <br />The program will consist of three interactive sessions, each 1.5-2.0 hours in length. Each <br />session will incorporate activities, discussions, and scenarios tailored to the board’s unique role <br />and needs. <br /> <br />Session 1: Understanding the Advisory Role <br />● Objective: Define and explore the expectations, boundaries, and opportunities of <br />serving in an advisory capacity. <br />● Topics Covered: <br />○ The role of the advisory board within the city’s governance structure. <br />○ Building trust and credibility as community representatives. <br />○ The value of volunteerism and civic engagement, with a focus on Kuleana <br />(responsibility). <br />● Activities: <br />○ Case studies of effective advisory boards. <br />○ Role-playing exercises to explore advisory scenarios. <br /> <br />Session 2: Engaging in Meaningful Conversations <br />● Objective: Equip board members with communication tools to foster understanding and <br />build relationships using the principles of A.L.O.H.A. <br />● Topics Covered: <br />○ Active listening and empathetic communication. <br />○ Navigating difficult conversations with respect and cultural sensitivity. <br />○ Building bridges between diverse community perspectives, guided by Pilina <br />(connection) and Lōkahi (harmony). <br />● Activities: <br />○ Interactive discussions on real-world challenges.
