Section F: Public Realm <br /> located in public areas that provide opportunities for views out to the water,people-watching, <br /> catching sun, waiting for others, and finding some semi-private space for reading and <br /> relaxation. When possible, bench design shall include integration into walls and planters. <br /> Free standing benches will be selected for durability and design. Benches must minimize <br /> water accumulation on the seating surface and deter abuse from skateboards or other <br /> vandalism. They also must relate to the aesthetic of the connecting street, district, or area. <br /> Trash Receptacles - Trash cans shall be located at or near all active public gathering areas <br /> especially those located near concessions and cafes. Trash cans must be lidded and enclosed to <br /> keep out seagulls and rodents. They also must be durable, easy to maintain, and easy to use <br /> when changing bags. <br /> Bollards - Bollards may be used to protect pedestrians from vehicles in areas where pedestrians <br /> access public plazas, the Seiner Wharf, and along the Champfer Woonerf. Bollards must be <br /> well proportioned and can be either permanent or removable.Permanent bollards can be used <br /> to define edges and entrances to pedestrian areas and control vehicular access. They may <br /> integrate illumination in pedestrian areas. Removable bollards are to be placed in areas where <br /> emergency or maintenance access may be required. Bollards will relate to the aesthetic of the <br /> district and may be custom integrated art. <br /> Bicycle amenities - Bike racks may be placed out of pedestrian circulation ways on the edges of <br /> plazas or open space areas where bikers may need to park their bikes and wish to walk, shop, <br /> eat, or rest. Access to and from the bike racks should be clear and unobstructed. Bike racks <br /> must be double-poled and wide resting the entire bike against the rack rather than single- <br /> poled. They should relate to the aesthetic of the space in form and placement. <br /> Signage <br /> Plazas, in general will not include signage except interpretive signs or possibly an information <br /> kiosk. Signs and information kiosks shall not block views or pedestrian flow. For more <br /> information, see the Signage Guidelines in this document. <br /> Special Event Banners <br /> For special festivals, markets, or events at the Performance Venue, small banners may be used <br /> on a temporary basis. Banners may be attached to one side of area lights. Banners must not <br /> contain private advertising,but may include the names of primary event sponsors. <br /> Fences, Hedges, and Railings <br /> Design Intent — Fences, hedges, and railings at the edges of plazas, courtyards, and other open <br /> spaces may provide safety, security, and in some cases privacy. Design of fences and railings <br /> will be compatible with other elements through form, materials, and finishes. Design will reflect <br /> the aesthetic of the Waterfront Place Central and will be informed by the district or area <br /> character. <br /> Materials — Exterior fences and railings will be constructed of materials durable in the marine <br /> climate.
