2025 PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE OVERLAY SPECIAL PROVISIONS <br />PW# 3830 <br /> SP-52 March 26, 2025 <br /> <br />applied to all joints. For Roadways open to traffic, the application of tack coat shall be 1 <br />limited to surfaces that will be paved during the same working shift. The spreading 2 <br />equipment shall be equipped with a thermometer to indicate the temperature of the tack 3 <br />coat material. 4 <br /> 5 <br />Equipment shall not operate on tacked surfaces until the tack has broken and cured. If 6 <br />the Contractor’s operation damages the tack coat it shall be repaired prior to placement 7 <br />of the HMA. 8 <br /> 9 <br />The tack coat shall be CSS-1, or CSS-1h emulsified asphalt. The CSS-1 and CSS-1h 10 <br />emulsified asphalt may be diluted once with water at a rate not to exceed one-part water 11 <br />to one-part emulsified asphalt. The tack coat shall have sufficient temperature such that 12 <br />it may be applied uniformly at the specified rate of application and shall not exceed the 13 <br />maximum temperature recommended by the emulsified asphalt manufacturer. 14 <br /> 15 <br />5-04.3(4)A Crack Sealing 16 <br />When the Proposal includes a pay item for crack sealing, seal cracks in accordance with 17 <br />Section 5-03. 18 <br /> 19 <br />5-04.3(4)B Vacant 20 <br /> 21 <br />5-04.3(4)C Pavement Repair 22 <br />The Contractor shall excavate pavement repair areas and shall backfill these with HMA 23 <br />in accordance with the details shown in the Plans and as marked in the field. The 24 <br />Contractor shall conduct the excavation operations in a manner that will protect the 25 <br />pavement that is to remain. Pavement not designated to be removed that is damaged as 26 <br />a result of the Contractor’s operations shall be repaired by the Contractor to the 27 <br />satisfaction of the Engineer at no cost to the Contracting Agency. The Contractor shall 28 <br />excavate only within one lane at a time unless approved otherwise by the Engineer. The 29 <br />Contractor shall not excavate more area than can be completely finished during the 30 <br />same shift, unless approved by the Engineer. 31 <br /> 32 <br />Unless otherwise shown in the Plans or determined by the Engineer, excavate to a depth 33 <br />of 1.0 feet. The Engineer will make the final determination of the excavation depth 34 <br />required. The minimum width of any pavement repair area shall be 40 inches unless 35 <br />shown otherwise in the Plans. Before any excavation, the existing pavement shall be 36 <br />sawcut or shall be removed by a pavement grinder. Excavated materials will become the 37 <br />property of the Contractor and shall be disposed of in a Contractor-provided site off the 38 <br />Right of Way or used in accordance with Sections 2-02.3(3) or 9-03.21. 39 <br /> 40 <br />Asphalt for tack coat shall be required as specified in Section 5-04.3(4). A heavy 41 <br />application of tack coat shall be applied to all surfaces of existing pavement in the 42 <br />pavement repair area. 43 <br /> 44 <br />Placement of the HMA backfill shall be accomplished in lifts not to exceed 0.35-foot 45 <br />compacted depth. Lifts that exceed 0.35-foot of compacted depth may be accomplished 46 <br />with the approval of the Engineer. Each lift shall be thoroughly compacted by a 47 <br />mechanical tamper or a roller. 48
