2025 FEDERAL OVERLAY, W MUKILTEO BLVD – GLENWOOD AVE TO DOGWOOD DR <br /> PAGE SP89 OF SP123 SPECIAL PROVISIONS <br />WORK ORDER #3842 April 15, 2025 FEDERAL AID# NHPP-2776(011) <br />Conduct planing operations in a manner that does not tear, break, burn, or otherwise 1 <br />damage the surface which is to remain. The finished planed surface must be slightly 2 <br />grooved or roughened and must be free from gouges, deep grooves, ridges, or other 3 <br />imperfections. The Contractor must repair any damage to the surface by the Contractor’s 4 <br />planing equipment, using an Engineer approved method. 5 <br /> 6 <br />Repair or replace any metal castings and other surface improvements damaged by 7 <br />planing, as determined by the Engineer. 8 <br /> 9 <br />A tapered wedge cut must be planed longitudinally along curb lines sufficient to provide a 10 <br />minimum of 4 inches of curb reveal after placement and compaction of the final wearing 11 <br />course. The dimensions of the wedge must be as shown on the Drawings or as specified 12 <br />by the Engineer. 13 <br /> 14 <br />A tapered wedge cut must also be made at transitions to adjoining pavement surfaces 15 <br />(meet lines) where butt joints are shown on the Drawings. Cut butt joints in a straight line 16 <br />with vertical faces 2 inches or more in height, producing a smooth transition to the 17 <br />existing adjoining pavement. 18 <br /> 19 <br />After planing is complete, planed surfaces must be swept, cleaned, and if required by the 20 <br />Contract, patched and preleveled. 21 <br /> 22 <br />The Engineer may direct additional depth planing. Before performing this additional 23 <br />depth planing, the Contractor must conduct a hidden metal in pavement detection survey 24 <br />as specified in Section 5-04.3(14)A. 25 <br /> 26 <br />5-04.3(14)A Pre-Planing Metal Detection Check 27 <br />Before starting planing of pavements, and before any additional depth planing required 28 <br />by the Engineer, the Contractor must conduct a physical survey of existing pavement to 29 <br />be planed with equipment that can identify hidden metal objects. 30 <br /> 31 <br />Should such metal be identified, promptly notify the Engineer. 32 <br /> 33 <br />See Section 1-07.16(1) regarding the protection of survey monumentation that may be 34 <br />hidden in pavement. 35 <br /> 36 <br />The Contractor is solely responsible for any damage to equipment resulting from the 37 <br />Contractor’s failure to conduct a pre-planing metal detection survey, or from the 38 <br />Contractor’s failure to notify the Engineer of any hidden metal that is detected. 39 <br /> 40 <br />*** 41 <br />Immediately after grinding, the Contractor shall construct an asphalt transition 42 <br />(temporary paper joints or ramps), on all traveled ways, wheel chair ramps, and exposed 43 <br />manholes, inlets, catch basins, monuments, valve boxes, and other structures on the 44 <br />street, regardless of depth in grinding. Asphalt transition must be removed prior to 45 <br />overlay. Cast iron structures left higher than 2” must be removed and steel plates 46 <br />installed to protect the opening and provide a suitable driving surface. 47
