An exterior pedestrian circulatfon system shall be required if there are no internal 1 <br />building pedestrian access routes that connect buildings to a public street, parking areas, or other 2 <br />buildings on the site. All dwellings must have exterior pedestrian access routes connectfng an entrance 3 <br />to a public street, parking lot, or driveway. 4 <br />C. Design Requirements. 5 <br />1. All developments with exterior pedestrian circulatfon systems shall provide connectfons 6 <br />between building entrances and the public sidewalk, transit stops, off-street parking areas, 7 <br />common open space areas and alleys where applicable. For developments with multfple 8 <br />buildings, provide for pedestrian circulatfon between all buildings. 9 <br />2. The exterior pedestrian circulatfon system shall be a minimum of four three feet wide 10 <br />without obstructfons, designed to meet federal, state and local accessibility standards, and 11 <br />where adjacent to driveways and parking areas they shall be separated by landscaping, raised 12 <br />curbs at least six inches high, bollards, or other treatments as approved. The walkway must be a 13 <br />hard surface acceptable per the city engineer. 14 <br />3. For safety and access, landscaping shall not block visibility to and from a path, especially 15 <br />where it approaches a roadway or driveway. 16 <br />4. In commercial settings where buildings face onto a parking area rather than the street, 17 <br />provide six-foot-wide walkways adjacent to the facades of retail and mixed-use buildings. This 18 <br />requirement applies where the adjacent parking stalls have wheel stops. When wheel stops are 19 <br />not incorporated, the walkway width shall be increased to a minimum of eight feet six inches. 20 <br />Figure 33-1: Walkway Width Adjacent to Surface Parking—With and Without Wheel Stops 21 <br /> 22 <br />5. Nonresidentfal and Multffamily Development. For nonresidentfal and multffamily 23 <br />developments with sixteen eight or fewer parking spaces, the pedestrian circulatfon system may 24 <br />be located within an auto travel lane. 25 <br />6. Single-FamilyResidentfal Detached, ADUs, and Duplexes. A driveway may be used to meet 26 <br />the pedestrian connectfon requirement between the buildingdwelling entrances and the public 27 <br />sidewalkstreet. 28
