1
' Proposed James Monroe Elementary School Replacement Subsurface Exploration, Geologic Hazards, andRevised Geotechnical Engineering Report
Everett, Washington Project and Site Conditions
2.0 PROJECT AND SITE DESCRIPTION
The existing Monroe Elementary School site is approximately 9.2 acres in total area.
Topography generally consists of high areas on the northwest and southeast parts of the site,
with a central low area that crosses the site from southwest to northeast. Overall vertical relief
across the site is approximately 15 feet. Significant slopes are present near the northwest, •
southeast, and southwest site corners. None of the slopes appear to meet the City of Everett
definition for Landslide Hazard Areas as defined in Everett Municipal Code Title 19,
Chapter 37.080. The site is occupied by the existing school buildings, which were constructed
in the 1960s. The existing buildings are single-story concrete block structures. Although the
buildings appear to have reached the end of their design life, a visual reconnaissance of the
' exterior of the buildings did not reveal indications of poor foundation performance. Portable
classrooms on the northwest part of the site do not have visually evident foundation support
deficiencies. Existing concrete walkways and asphalt parking lots, driveways, and play areas
are in good condition for their age, and show no visual evidence of pervasive settlement or
subgrade drainage problems.
' The project will include demolition of the existing school buildings, and construction of a new
elementary school. The new buildings will be located on the east-central part of the site, in an
area currently occupied by the existing buildings and playground areas. We anticipate that the
' new buildings will be low-rise structures with low to moderate foundation loads typical of
school construction methods and materials. New sidewalks, utilities, and pavement areas are
also expected. We anticipate that the new school buildings and related improvements will be
constructed close to existing grades, without the need for deep earthwork cuts or thick fills. A
project plan, SD 1.1 prepared by DYKEMAN, does not include substantial retaining walls or
rockeries.
1
3.0 SUBSURFACE EXPLORATION
' Our subsurface exploration completed for this project included advancing seven exploration
borings. The conclusions and recommendations presented in this report are based on the
explorations completed for this study. The locations and depths of the explorations were
completed within site and budget constraints.
' 3.1 Exploration Borings
The exploration borings, were completed by advancing hollow-stem auger tools with a track-
' mounted drill rig. During the drilling process, samples were obtained at generally 2.5 to
5-foot-depth intervals. The exploration borings were continuously observed and logged by a
representative from our firm. The exploration logs presented in the Appendix are based on the
field logs, drilling action, and inspection of the samples secured.
' October 5, 2009 ASSOCIATED EARTH SCIENCES, INC.
f3WG/!d-KE090312A3-Projecis1200903121KEIWP Page 2
