mounted underneath the platform, the same as herein required for <br /> electric machines. <br /> Any passenger elevator hereafter altered shall be provided <br /> with a device to prevent the falling of the car in case of failure <br /> or disarrangement of the machinery, and when practicable the <br /> Inspector of Buildings may require the installation of such other <br /> safety device as are herein required for new elevator installations. <br /> (b) Every passenger elevator shall be provided with a <br /> safety device that will cause the car to come to a general stop <br /> within 6 feet 0 inches to 12 feet 0 inches after the safety device <br /> starts to operate. An increase of not more than 50 per cent. in the <br /> velocity of the car beyond its fixed normal velocity shall operate <br /> the safety device. <br /> (c) Substantial bumpers of elastic materials shall be <br /> placed at the bottom of all passenger elevator shafts except in. <br /> shafts designed for plunger elevators. Such bumpers shall be of <br /> such height as to prevent the safety device under the car platform <br /> from striking the bottom of the pit when the car rests on the bumpers• <br /> (d) Every freight elevator having a run of more than <br /> one story- and having a hand rope control shall be equipped with a <br /> hand rope locking device so that the elevator cannot be started <br /> from any floor except the floor at which the elevator is standing•. <br /> (e) It shall be the duty of the owner or agent of any <br /> elevator installation to notify the Inspector of Buildings when <br /> such installation iS completed and ready for test or inspection. The <br /> contractor installing the elevator. machinery shall prepare for such <br /> test and inspection of the installation as hereinafter requiredd <br /> without expense to the city. <br /> (f) Elevator installations hereafter built or materially <br /> altered shall not be put into service until after the same shall <br />
