Unload ballast
in suNicient quantities lhal wiil form a high shuulder and will fill the lie cribs and provide an adequale
amount oi ballast for the initial lreck lift, plus a surplus as required to continue lo hold the track in
Ilne after lhe initial track lifl.
B Track surfacing shall be by melhods lhat will prevent undue bending of the rail, slraioing oi the
joints, and damaging or loosening the spnng clip fastenings. The amounl of Irack hR shall neither
exceed 4 inches nor endanger the honzontal and veAical slability of lhe lrack. The track shall be
raised so thal a final lift shall not be less lhan 1 inch or more than 3 inches when bringing the lrack
to the final suAace.Complele(inasuAacing and aligning ol lhe lrack aNer the track has been initiaily
surlaced and aiigned, tastened, and joined logether by specified method
C Have restraining rail in place tor final tampmg, suAacing and lining operation.
D A%er the track has been finally raised, Imed and suAaced, the reils shall be refastened withm the
specitied zerothermal stress temperature range. Clips shall be lhoroughly cleaned ol dust, dirt, and
grindings prior to retaslening of rail Ties and (aslening devices damaged during the suAacing
operetion shall be replaced with new ties and lastening devices at no addilional cosl to the Owner.
E. The final raising and aligning operations shell fill cribs and shoulders with ballasl lo wilhin 1 inch
below the base oi rail. Provide a minimum ot 1-inch clearance between metallic portions ot the lrack
structure end ballast.
F. Discontinue suAacing when the ambient lemperalure is higher lhan 95 degrees F or the rail
temperature exceeds 100 degrees F
G Perlortn tamping with a squeeze-vibratory type power tampec Conlrol of the power tamper's
tamping cyce shall ensure the mazimum undorm compaction of ballasl around the track Uniformly
tamp ballasl under bolh sides of each lie, directly under each running rail tor a dislance oi 1 B inches
on both sides of the raiL Tamping will not be permitled at the center ot the tie,but fill the cnbs with
ballast For each tie, proceed wlth tamping simultaneously inside and outside both running rails on
both sides of the tie. MechaNcally tamp the total treck length including transition slab area track
zones.
H Compact ballast shoulders wdh a vibretory shoulder compactor. Continue compacting unlil the
ballast is firmly interlocked and lhe surface is true and unyielding, displaying no delormalion or
movement under the compacGon eqwpment drainage lines, inlets, and underground ulilities
conduits from damage during tamping and compacting.
I Afler the fmal suriacing and Iming oi lrack has been completed, dress the ballast to coniorm to the
ballast seclrons indicated on the Contract Drawings Reslope subballast outside lhe toe of slope oi
ballast lhal has been fouled or disturbed by the Contracror's operaUons to lhe indicated cross
secfions on tha Contract Drawings
J The fnal suAace and alignment of track shall be within the ballasted track installation tolerances
specdied m Section 34 11 10.
