The soil profile in Plate 3 indicates that portions of the tunnel bottom will be close to glacial
till. The settlement of this section should be negligible. The settlement of the section in fill is
estimated to be on the order of 1/4 to 3/8 inch.
5.5.2 Lateral Earth Pressure
Lateral earth pressure parameters have been developed for use in the design of the walls of
the tunnels, utilidors, trenches and pits. The recommendations for the earth prenures to be used
to design non -yielding subsurface walls are based on experience in the area and the record of
performance of similar existing structures at the Boeing, Everett Facility. At -rest earth pressures
on non -yielding subsurface walls may be estimated using an equivalent fluid weighing 50 pounds
per cubic foot (pcf) plus an additional uniform lateral load of 200 psf from the floor load. Caro
should be taken to avoid overcompaction of the backfill. Hand -operated mechanical compactor
should be used to compact granular backfill immediately adjacent to the walls in order to avoid
increasing lateral pressures.
3.5.4 Temporary Slopes
Temporary slopes should not be cut at will" exceeding 1.25N:1 V. The edge of the excavation
should be no closer than 4 feet from the wall of the existing building. OSHA regulations should
also be followed.
5.6 RETAINING WALL
Retaining walls up to about 8 feet in height are proposed at the perimeter of the expansion.
Active lateral earth pressure of 35 pcf equivalent fluid density can be used for the design of the
walls. An additional uniform 200 psf of surcharge from the slab should be included where the
slab is immediately adjacent to the wall. Again, care should be taken to avoid overcompaction
of the backfill. Hsnd-operated mechanical compactor should be used to compact granular backfill
immediately adjacent to the walls in order to avoid increasing the lateral pressures.
s-005.00695-016\uoeO?00.sp
00695.509.016 18
