In each case, a microfilm copy will provide greater access, while
protecting the fragile original documents.
During the last 25 years the library has been engaged in an on-going effort to preserve our
valuable historical collections. We have provided climate-controlled storage and have
purchased acid-free document boxes and barrier sheets for their protection. The Everett
Public Library always tries to balance these preservation needs with the need to make the
same materials available to the public.
While all materials in this project are the property of Everett Public Library and this is not a
partnership project, microfilming will make them available for purchase by other libraries
(academic, public and genealogy). Microfilming will also make them available to researchers
in Washington State and beyond, as the materials are valuable to others outside of our
geographic boundaries.
A written document will be made as part of this project that can be shared with others making
the same considerations. This will be available to anyone but will be publicized also through
the League of Snohomish County Heritage Organizations newsletter. We will explore having
a League workshop on the topic. See the League website for heritage organizations that
would benefit. www.snocoheritage.org
This project is the next step in preservation of our manuscripts. Actually,it is the final step in
long-term preservation, the remaining tasks after that being ongoing maintenance of the
originals, microfilm replacement and keeping pace with technological changes. Some of these
materials will eventually be digitized for use at our website.
49
15 of 25
