' 4+ 3 •��-' ..�.u' a.c f° <br /> Everett Public Library updated its Strategic Plan in the summer of 2004,using a group of <br /> community members to assist in determining the library's future in an environment of <br /> shrinking tax support.The collections and services of the Northwest Room were identified by <br /> that committee as core library functions in the first strategic initiative. The language from the <br /> plan is below: <br /> Strategic Initiative I: Everett Public Library Provides Resources and Space to Offer Lifelong <br /> Learning in the Community <br /> Customers see the Northwest Room as the source for local history <br /> 7.Objective: Maintain Vault and Archive so that materials are both easy to access and properly <br /> stored. <br /> This objective was identified by the planning committee as a core service of the library.Although the <br /> committee did not identify specific Northwest collections,nor did they prioritize them,our project <br /> director has been attending preservation workshops for several years.These workshops have provided <br /> her with the information necessary to assess our collection,and plan a strategy for preserving <br /> materials.Two years ago we applied for and received a grant to preserve a collection of unique <br /> panorama photographs,some of which were so fragile they had not been seen for decades.The <br /> manuscript material represents the next stage of our preservation efforts. <br /> The library's Northwest Room staff has always had an overall goal of preservation for all materials in <br /> its care. This has functioned as an informal plan,and library budget has supported this need by way <br /> of prioritizing each year.
