hlayor ivloore
Ron Cameron, Traffic Enineer .
July 16, 1979
\VL-XI_GR'S GAS LINES
Sgt. hlcllannald of tLe f-_verett Police Department and I met with Cldon \Y'exler,
their Comptroller, and their Security Advisor on Tuesday, July 3, 1979 (3:30 -4:30
p.m.) following Council's discussion of the gas line problem on Cvergreen Way at
Al's Auto.
1Vexler explained that the Grove and Dicl<'s Auto had already catled and would have
the businesses (about 6) south of 1Vexler's and thc Fleming residents at Council if
the lines were routed on Pleming as reported by the nevs. The concerns vere:
- 131oc1<ing Fleming's drivevays
- Cutting through lots (Grove , Dicl.'s, Filibecl<s, etc.) from Gvergreen
to Fleming creatino hazard for customers, noise, etc.
- Traffic conestion on Fleming - a narrov road.
- Traffic coming from both direction into the Lal:e St. entrance at AI's.
- The line onto L-vergreen fluctuates and cannot be regularly predicted;
what happens when there is a small line nut into Evergreen (the lines o
in "spurts")?
-\'L'exler employees parl<ing on P'leming have haci tires slashed already.
Sgt. ivlcDannald expressed concern of traffic safet with speeding cars, the line,
and narrowness of Pleming and that it wodcl be difficult to safely patrol.
The control of traffic blocking driveways beiwzen Pay i Pal: and the ;hop next io
Al's is almost impossible vith available means. They have angle parl<ino directly
off Evergreen - approximately 200 feet of continuous driveway. Al's iiad giv2n rope
with flags to identify holdino areas betveen "driveways" but even viih the flas
and cardboard signs (DO NOT BLOCI< DRIVEIVAY), there was a continuous lir.
There is no practical vay to install City "NO PARI<ING" signs that voldn't be run
ove: or pose pedestrian hazard in the paved shoulder parl<ing area. Thc 40 feet
needed to bad<eut and manewer from the stores extends into the shoulder arca
where :he gas line forms.
I offered a diagramatic sign shovin heavy lines for Bvergreen, vladison and
Pleining with names and arrows identifying the roue and a legend saying "Gf15
LINL- FORMS VIA 1=LL-1NG", and "L1NE FORti1S S/O HGRL° for }lemin. AI's was
concerned that even ith flags, cnnes, and the sin thai iraific a'etild cut around
the pumps illfOUbl II1L' CkIC area and into tlc line, rsulting in fi;t [it;hts.
