The large showroom roof ie aupported by timber colus and a single bearing
wall w•ith ehort returns at each end. The bearing wall provides some
resistance to forces in the north-south direction, but there is almos[ no
resietance to the toraional Porces produced, nor to east-west Forces.
Apparently the contribution of the second floor oFfice structure to the
eaet has been responsible for the ehowroom's still standing.
3.3 Recommendatione
Strengthen [he roof atructure ver the center bay by adding addi[ional
membera to the existing beams en add a struc[ural ridge beam imder the
preaent nominal ridge beam. Add additional posts under each end of
the nW membera.
Strengthen the vnulted ceiling by adding members to resist the arch
thruste. This can be done tn several ways, either by adding a steel
[ie rod at the north and aouth sides of the vault or by tieing the ends
of the vault [o the glued laminated beam below to allo; the beam to take
the thruet. The choice of inethod will depend on which can be dane more
economically, considering accese for the work and exact arrangement of the
preaent atructure. In addition to the above, reinforce the supports of
the lighting trough around the vaulted ceiling and pa[ch the ceiling at
the cracke in each corner of the bav.
inoboth [hetnorthrsoutheand eastTeesttditrectionsal Thiselsathehmostoex-
tensive etructural work required in the entire building complex. Although
there are several possible ways Co provide the required strenqth, none cen
be accomplished without affecting the appearance of [lie building [o some
degree. Theae possible solutions are discussed Uelow. 'Che choice of
which solution to inpl.ment should be made afeer considering the structural,
financisl and esthetic advantaes and disadvantages of each. That choice
ia beyond the scope of this report.
Cantilevered steel columns would provide lateral strength bv transmitting
the force into the concrete basement walls. Six or eight steel tube coluvms
apProximately six inches square would be installed adjacent r.o existing
timber colus. These steel colus would extend through the floor and
be bolted to the top and 'oottom of r.he basement c,11:, They could be
installed either inside or outside the building, but in[erior colus would
be preferable £rom first cost and maintenance viewpoincs.
Steel rod X-bracing ceuld be installed in a minimum of four windows. two
in the front and one on each end wall of the bilding, 'Ihis bracing would
have [o be locatad over concrete 6asement walls and tied tc tlem, and
aould of course be visible. The rods would be approxima[ely one inch in
diameter. N.though detalled cost estimates caere not mada this solution
uold proUably be least expensive.
Steel frames could be installed in the exterior c.alls of [he north snd
south sales offices. The frames c:ould consist of [hree stel pipe colunms
and horiznntal and diugonal Lracing in each office. 1'Lav ;ot:l.d e7:ter.d frnm
th .-.00f [o the basement floor and could be ins[alled :dciiolc removtng
rlic• urall finishes, hu; a+ould have to extend [hrough thc ftnor acd ceiling,
s ae[imated chat this solution i;ould be less expensive ehan the
!,

j'7 :-_ . j ._"z..
