IGeologic Investigation and Geotechmcal Engineering Report
Jones Residence
3611 Federalave.
F_veren, Washington
98-08-10
horizontal lifts that are compacted to a non -yielding condition utilizing a roller or similar compactive
I equipment. We recommend utilizing a self propelled, approximate 10 ton vibratory roller to achieve the
recommended compaction with a minimum of effort. Smaller rollers or tow -behind rollers may be used,
I however, more time and compactive effort may be required with the smaller equipment to achieve the
required compaction. Periodic testing of structural fill as it is being placed is recommended to ensure
f uniformity of placement and to help limit differential settlement potentials. The amount of testing and the
timing of the testing should be discussed with and approved by GES, Inc. prior to the placement of any fill
on the site.
Fills placed in sloping areas greater than 5:1(H:I) should be constructed only on properly benched and
keyed soil, as specified in WSDOT Standard Specification section 2-03.3(14), Earth Embankment
I Construction. Improperly benched and placed fill over and around slopes could result in movement of the
fill at some later date or unacceptable amounts of differential settlement over time. Permanently exposed
till slopes should not be steeper than 2:1(H: f ). If steeper slopes are necessary, reinforced till or retaining
walls may be required. The need for and placement of retaining walls on this site was not determined as of
I the time of preparation of this report. When final grades have been established, GES, INC., as needed, on
an individual basis should review the location and use of retaining walls. If necessary, specific design
Isections and specifications can be prepared for that use.
We recommend that all utility backfill consist of clean, granular structural fill placed per the
recommendations given above.
4.4 Cuts and Excavations
i
Careful and prudent construction practices are advised when working around cuts, excavations and slopes
graded from fill. All cuts and excavations should conform to Washington Department of Labor and
hidustries Standards for Construction Work, chapter 296-155 WAC part N. Excavations on this site
will stand in near vertical sidewalls to a maximum depth of four -(a) feet. All excavations over four-(4) feet
10 1 GES, Inc.
