We recommend that an allowable bearing • <br /> pressure of 2,500 pounds per squaze foot (ps� be utilized for desiga nur?oscs, induding both <br /> dead and live loads. An increase of one-third may be used for s?;or_ '�.:�n wind or seismic <br /> loading. Perimeter footings should be buried at least 18 inches uuo the surrounding soil for <br /> frost protecdon. No minimum burial depth is requLed for interior footings. However, all <br /> footings must penetrate to the prescribed bearing stratum and no footing shall be founded in or <br /> above loose, organic, or existing fill soils. For a one-story savcture H•ith a daylight basement, <br /> all footings should have a minimum width of 16 inches. For a two-story structure with a <br /> daylight basement, all footings should have a minnnum wid�h of 18 inches. <br /> It should be noted that the area bounded by lines extending downward at 1H:IV from any <br /> footing must not intersect another footing or intersE�ct a filled area which has not been <br /> compacted to at least 95 percent of ASTM:D 1557. In addition, a 1.SH:1V line extending <br /> down from any footing must not daylight because sloughing or raveling may eventually <br /> undermine the footing. Thus, footings should not be placed near the edge of steps or cuts in <br /> the bearing soils. <br /> Anticipated settlement of footings founded on the nacural, dense to very dense, unweathered <br /> lodgement till sediments should be less than 1 inch. However, disturbed soil not removed <br /> from footing excavations prior to foodng placement could result in increased settlements. All <br /> footings should be inspected by AESI prior to placing concrete to verify that the design bearing <br /> capacity of the soils has been attained and that construction cunforms with the <br /> recommendations contained in this report. Such inspections may be required b}� �he aoverning <br /> municipality. Perimeter footing drains shoeld be provided as discussed under the section on <br /> Drainage Considerations. <br /> Option 2• Drilled Piers <br /> Another alternative for foundation support for the proposed structure would be to utilize a deep <br /> foundation system consisting of drilled in-place concrete piers. Installation of drilled piers <br /> consists of placing concrete in pre-drilled, open holes. Ground water seepage and some minor <br /> caving was observed in the exploration pits excavated at the site. Consequendy, if a drilled <br /> pier foundation is used, the contractor should be prepared to case the excavations and handle <br /> the water, if necessary. We recommend the use of a concrete pump with its hose extended to <br /> the bottom of the hole to assure that any seepage present is adequately displaced during <br /> pumping of the concrete. <br /> Piers with a minimum diameter of 16 inches, and properly reinforced, will be capable of <br /> supporting an allowable vertical compressive load of 10 tons per pier. An allowable lateral <br /> capacity of 2 tons per pier can be used assuming a fixed head condition and a maximum 1 inch <br /> of detlecticn at the ground surface. An uplifr capaciry of 2 tons per pier can also be assumed. <br /> 11 <br />
