Drilling was monitored by a soils technician from. our staff who
located the drill sites, examined and classified the subsurface soils,
and maintained a detailed log of each exploration. The boring logs are
presented on Plate 2. Soils were classified in accordance with the
Unified Soil Classification System which is explained on Plate 3. Both
relatively undisturbed and disturbed samples of the subsurface soils were
obtained from the borings at the locations indicated on the logs using a
Dames a Moore Type U Sampler of the type shown on Plate 4. The sampler
was driven with a weight of 360 pounds falling a distance of about 36
inches. The number of blows required to driā¢fe the sampler 12 inches into
the soil, or other specified distances, is indicated immediately above
the sample notations on the logs.
Due to the hard and gravelly nature of the subsoils, relatively
few undisturbed samples suitably for testing were recovered. Two samples
from Boring 2 were tested to determine their moisture and density charac-
teristics. The test results are shorm opposite the corresponding sample
notations on the log.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
Our explorations indicate tha'. the entire building site is underlain
by dense to very dense glacial till at shallow depths. some portions of
the building area contain thin deposits of fill above the till. Glacial
till is a very dense mixture of soil particles which range in size from
clay to boulders, with the major constituents being sand and silt.
Till has been highly consolidated in the past by glacial ice and normally
provides excellent foundation support.
The mpAimum depth to the top of the till was about 4-1/2 feet at the
boring locations. However, the till may be at samewhat greater depths in
areas which were not explored.
Several buried utilities are present in the northern portion of the
building site, including a storm drain and electrical lines. The utilities
will have to be rerouted during construction. The depth to undisturbed
-3-
"^MES 6 moo"IE
