Gcotechnical Lnginccrine Rcpoit
Ilousing Hopc
December 5, 200d
RMI Filc No.21701
!'agc 13
dischrge inlo tightlines Ieading to :m appropriate collection and discharge poinC Surface water
drains and roof drains should nut be connectcd to wall or footing drains.
Slhs-on-Gradc
SIaUs-on-grade should be suppurted on subgradc soils prepared as described in the Site
I'reparxtion and Grading subsec[ion of Ihis ieport. Whee moisture-conVol is important, c
recommend that aII floor slabs be underlain by at Icast 6 inclies of free-draining sand or gravel fur
use as a capillary break. We recommend tha[ the capillary brcak be hydraulically connected to
[he footing drain system to nllow free drainage from under the slab. A suitable vapor barrier,
such as heavy plastic sheeting (10-mil or L'iicker), should be placed over dic capllary brcak
material. An additionnt 4-inch-thick crushed gravel blanket may be used to cover the vapor
oarriec This gravel blanket is to protect the vapor barricr membrane and [o aid in curing the
concrete. It will also prevcnt cement paste Ird:im down into the capillary break [hroueh the
joints or tears in dic vapar barricr.
Sitc Drainagc
Sur1'ace nr:„a: rn tinished ground surface should be eraded such Ihat stonn water is
directed to sn appropria[e sromi 'ater collection system. Water should not be allowed to stand in
any area where footings, slabs,or pavcments are to be constructed. Final site grades should allow
for draivage away Gom the buildings. We suggest that the finished gruund be sloped at a
minimum eradient of 3 percent for a distnnce of at least 10 feet away from the building. Surface
water should bc collected by permanent catch basins and drain lines and be discharged into an
appropriatc discharce systcm.
Suhsurface llrain:e: \Ve rcommend the use of footing drains around lhe planned struc[ures
and retaining walls. Footing drains should be installed at least 1 foot below planned finished
(locr slab. The drains should consist of minimum 4-inch-diameter, riid, slotted or perforated,
PVC pipc surrounded by free-Jraining material, and wmpped in fil[er fabric sucl as Mirafi
I dONSL. We recommend that the Gee-draining material consist of an 18-inch-ide zone of clean
(Icss than 3 percen[ fines), granular material placed along thc back of the wall. Pea gravel is an
acceptabie drain materinl or drainage cumposite may be used instead. The free-draining material
shaild extend up the wali to 1 foot below the finished surface.
