Dcrickson
Puuing up a new building or renovaung a building that is defcient in parking los encourages a depressed arca Cor at
Ieast thc nex[ c aple of generauons, bcfore thesc again can be torn down and replaced.'ihcre is no cncouragemcnt to
maimain or increase ihe apxar'.uce ot a building if ihose around are deteriorating.
There arc now many improved propenies in this acea in just 1hc past year. Just up the nczt comcr on 34ih and
Rucker there is a beaudfu! new two story apartment complcx rccently completed and alihough not fully rented it is
nice sec the parldng salL f lled wih available oCC sVect parldng.'Ihc ncw project just thrce houses from this
building undcr consideration has nicety appointed parF:ing stalls and really does upgtade thc neighborhoat.
My qucsuon is what has changed since the meeting when we met tn discuss the gcanting of an variance far a
propeny that is just thrce houses from lhis one we are mlking about tonighG It is my belief that if the original code
is set to have one parldng placc for one apanmcnt or room then we should consider any changes under tha council
code for long tertn p!anning and not as a variance.
Many businesses are discouragetl from moving to our down town locauon bccause of tt, poor parking. No wherc to
park wstomers cars. If we fill the sveets wiU residents cars we will never get ahead. It is not in tie Gest entercst of
he city or is residens to have short sighted variances of the code allowing ineftecuve use o[ ihe areas. The map
indicates that we are RS in the locauun in quesuon, right nezt to he B3 busiest IceaUon in Everett Everett is
moving. This cenval part of the town is the center of Snohomish Counry with the main Evcreu Past Otfice onc
block away, City Hali and Snohomish County Counhousc 2 and 3 blocks away.
Fonunately you and yow wmmitee have been farsightcd enough to havc a broad vicw o( eff cicnt city planning and
not crcate a dumpy down town. Business expansion will come and will incrcase our tac base and will be possible if
wc ensure casy ingress ad egress w he cenval area.
On a previous cecasion here (or a variance hearing I heard anothei owner say that a change in his building dcsign was
probably not possible to accommodate Uie necessary packing stalls to bring it up to code, and that the project may be
abandoned. However, no variance wac granted and conswction bcgan shonly after wiih the new building being huilt
with the ncccssary parking lots. I for unc am gratcful that tliis owner Ihought enough of the arca to invest in its
e[fcctivc gcowth for a bng time to come.
You people are charged with the responsibiliry of making decisions that will stand and creatc a legacy of sensible
eftcclivc planning ihat yours and my children's children wiil be pmud of.
Thank you ! considcring my point of view.
Yours sin
/ -f
D.
