Cable placed in conduit shall be pulled without interruption using nylon cable ai:ched to a power winch All
equipment shali be carefully ciiecked to ensure that it is proverly set up prior to beginnir¢ the pulling operation,
in order to minimize inteiruption once pulling has started. The cable shall be pulled at the rate of 15 fcet per
minutc or less.
I Careful anention shall be paid ro warnings from observers as the: cable is bein; pulled so that pulling may be
stopped quickly whenever necessary to avoid damage to the cablc.
If for any reason the pulling operation is halted behveen junctin boxes, the winch operator shall release the
I tension on the winch unless directed to do so by the Gngineer. In restarting the pulling operation, the inertia of the
cablc should be overcome by gradually increasing the tension in steps a few seconds apart until the cable once
again is in mction.
Cable pulliag shall be stopped imr, cdiately if ihe cable on a rer,l binds or does not pay off freely. The cause of
the binding must be cleared to the saSisfaction of the Engneer bcfo:e the pull-in oEieration is continued. The cable
rcel shall tum freely or the cable canhe fed by hard so that thr,re is no tension on ehe cable as it enters the conduit
 system.
I
A cable fceder guide of suitable dimensions shall be used beh+een the r.able rec!and the face of the duct to protect
I the cable and guide it into the Juc[ as ii is paycd off the reel. The cable shall q,oi !e bent at any location to a
radius less than i 0 times the cable outside diameter.
I The mechanical stress piaced upon a csble during installation shall not be such that the cable is :wisted or
stretched. The d:rection in which the cable is to be pulled s!iall be provided by the Engincer.
As the cable is payed off the reel, it shall be carefully inspected fejac};et defects. If de;ucts are noticed, thc
I pu'Iing operation shall be stopped immediatly and the Lngineer will determine what correctivc action shall be
taken. The pay-off reel shall be monitored to,:nsure that'the cable is not under tension as it is pa,ved off the reel.
I As the cables are peyed off the reel into the cable feeder guide, they shall be sufficienlly lubricated with a type of
ubricant recommended by the cable manufacdwer and approved by the Cngineer. A cable lubricator (funnel)
shall be placed around the cable just ahead of thc cable feeder ro facilitate roper lubrication of the cable.
I On caole runs which involve one or more interned4ate janction boxes, the cblc shall be routed a:ound an
intermediate power assist or wheel. The dinmeter of t.his d+:vice shall not bc less than 24". An intemediate power
assst shall bc used at any junction box where tha fa:ce needed to pull the cable to the next junction box or cablc
I rennination cabinet woulC othenvise exceed the ma:ciizium allowable pulling tension for the cable involved. 1'he
catde shall make 1 S turns around asy intermediate power assist. Sleck cable pulled out at intermediete junction
boxes shall be restricted to the minimum amount necessary for routing around the particular rotary device and
back into the next conduit section. Cable shall iot be laid on tti: ground. C.ure shall bc taken to avoid the
accumulation of dirt or other debris on the lubricatr.d cable.
Thc operator of the intcrtnediate powcr assist shall careTully coordinatc its operaticn wiQi thot of the powcr winch
+ to ensure that the cable entering the down-line cenduit run is not imder tension.

After the cable has bcen placed, the exposed cable in the junction boxes and cabinets shall be wiped cl.ean of cai:le
Ilubricant with a cloth.
Sucient cable, plus 28" i'I1CfM bendig radius pertnils, should be left in each cabinet to prcrperly tertninate the
I cables. All uiled ends should b examined for evid.nce of damage due to the puling operation. The cabic
sheath should not be pulleJ beyond the cable care. Additionally, 6' of slack catle shall be IeR in each
intcrtncdiate junction box.
I ,
i
,,:w.,.ooe.wvao_.ro.o..a« j
David 8vans arid Associatcs,Inc.
