Memo to Jim Iles
April 4, 1984
.
It was indicated that Dan's sister, Mrs. Johnston, stbps by his house
and drops off a Social Security check to him and that is all she does.
I indicaed that in tlie past I have dealt with Mrs. Johnston in an
attempt to get her and her family to do something pertaining to Dan's
environment but she has always been uncooperative.
The talk then centered around friends and neignbors helping Dan. They
indicated that there were individuals willing to donate a shower stall;
others werr ailling to donate furniture, clothing and other items.
Sally Noffman, CSO, indicated that this type of help would be insufficient.
Dan would break up the furniture and destroy household items as he has
done in the past. Sally indicated that Dan needed to be watched over
more closely.
The Mental Health Officer indicated that Dan was not considered a severe
mental case but was bordering on'it. Therefore, Mental Nealth could not
step in and take over in this case. DSHS indicated that so long as there
was a roof over his head, an income and food available to him, they
could not step in and take over.
Mrs. Anderson, a friend and business owner, stated that it would be
better for Dan to live in her horse barn since it was cleaner than the
house Dan lived in.
Dan's sister, Mrs. Merritt, said she was suprised at the way Dan was
living since she thought the other sister, Mrs. Johnston, was taking care
of Can. She and her husband are not capable of taking complete care of
Dan, but they are concerned about him.
I asked if there was a way to have this situation presented to the Court
and have the guardianship of Dan's financial security changed from Mrs.
Johnston to an agency who wuld have a better budget system for providing
for Dan and at the same time have more control over him and his actions
plus provide a suitable living environment. This is possible.
I stated that the structure Dan is now living in is far worse than 90% of
the structures I have posted "Illegal to Occupy" and eventually torn
down.
The group asked me what it would take to rehabilitate the structure and
I responded with:
The structural portion of the house would have to be
worked on to a great extent to make the, structure sound
again.
2. The vital systems, plumbing, electrical and mechanical
would have to be completely redone.
-3-

z
0

m
- .

.. -
cn x
m
co
m o
-i c
o;
m
_ -Z-i
m
H
.Q
n=
 .
-i in

T
O 7
T
- m'
m
N
O
o r
c m
c in
y N
z c'
 m
a

s
n
z
-
x
N
z
0
-i

m
