Global Firc Protection Consulting, lnc.
4401 Water Oak Court
Concord, CA 94521
925-825-4643
fax 925-6914367
Based on racking configuration and service access spacing a ra:.k definition must be
selected to establish design requirements. In NFPA 231C, multi-row rack systems are
defined in Section 1-2, "Multi-row racks are racks greater than 12 feet wide or single or
double row racks separated by aisles less than 3 1/2-feet wide having an overall width
greater than 12 feet " Based on this definition the racking system for this facility is
considered multi-row racks.
The multi-row racking system will utilize the service aisle between the racks as the
longitudinal flue space. 3 to 6-inch uansverse flue spaces aze provided at the rack uprights.
The storage materials ue paper records in cardboazd cartons; therefore, in accordance with
NFPA 231 C, Section 2-1.1, Commodity Classifrcution, this storage material is censidered
a Class III commodity.
Overhead SprinN.ler System
The new sprinkler system will be hydraulically designed per the requirement of NFPA
231 C for multi-row rack storage. The required density is 0.30 gpm for the hydraulically
most remote 2,000 square feet using 165° sprinklers. Based on IMRM method of storage
and material the design requirements are based on Class III commodity with multi-row
racking the minimum density are per NFPF: 231C Table 7.11 (See Attachcl).
Flow switches will be provided on the ceiling sprinkler syste.ms for notification of water
flow to the fire department.
In-Rack Sprinkler System
In-rack sprinklers will be provided in the longitudinal and transverse flues and vill exceed
the requirements of NFPA 231 C Chapter 7. The installation will have three levels of in-
rack sprinklers at the 11-foot 8-inch, 21-foot Q•inch and 30 foot 4-inch elevations spaced
just below the metal grating of the catwalk access system and the main aisles. Sprinklers in
the aisle/longitudinal will be spaced approximately 10 foot 3-inches on line between the
racks and will be staggered horizontally or veRically.
In addition to the sprinklers in the aisle/longitudinal flue spaces sprinklers will be installed
in the transverse flues at each catwalk level. The sprinklers will be lceated approximately
2 feet from the face of the rack and 6-inches above the cartons. (See attached)
In-rack sprinkler system design will be based on NFPA 231 C with ten sprinklets flowing,
five on each of two elevations, with a flow of not less than 30 gpm per sprinkler in
accordance with NFPA 231 C, and will be balanced with the ceiling sprinkler system at the
higher pressure. The in-rack sprinklers will be quick rcsponse, 165° F upright sprinklers.
Iron Mountain
Everett, Washington
01-1296
