R

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING STUDY
Trace and Associates
July 19, 2005
E-11880
Paoe 7
The existing fill also cuntained localized pockets of organic debris. If soil containing
AU more than 5 percent organic debris by weight is encounterad at construction subgrade
elevation, it should be overexcavated and replaced with structural fill.

',

During dry weather, any non-organic compactable granular soil with a maximum grain
size of 4 inches can be used for structural fill. Fill for use during wet weather should
consist of a well-graded granular material having a maximum grain size of 4 inches and
no more than 5 percent fines passing the No. 200 sieve. A contingency in the
earthwork budget should be included for this possibility.
Existing Fili Slopes
The proposed improvement area is bordered to the north by an approximately 40 foot
high fill slope that was recently cut back to 2H:1 V as part of the mass grading
operation at the site. As a result, at the time of our fieldwork, the slope contained no
vegetation. In our opinion, the ascending slope should be protected from erosion by
covering the face of the slope with jute mesh, and the slope should be hydroseeded.
The condition of the slope should be periodically observed for indications of erosion or
slope failure.
Foundations
Based on the results of our study, in our opinion, development of the site with the
proposed retail development is feasible from a geotechnical engineering standpoint.
However, the subject site is underlain by up to 14.5 feet of existing fill that may not be
suitable for direct support of the buildings in its present conditions. As such, in our
opinion, support for the proposed buildings may be provided using conventionai spread
and coniinuous footing foundation systems bearing on a minimum of 2 feet structural
fill. This can be accomplished by overexcavating to at least 12 inches below the
footing subgrade elevation and compacting the exposed soils at the bottom of the
overexcavation to the requirements of structural fill, then backfilling back up to the
footing subgrade elevation with structural fill.
Garlh Consuitanis.
