t ;
April 23, 2007
Mr. Scott Anderson
L&A Job No. 6A 12G
Pagc 7
areas. Unsupported temporary cuts greater than 4 fcet in height should be no steeper than 1I-I:l V
in the surficial topsoil and weathered till soils and may be vertical in the underlying very-dense
tresh till soils, provided that the overall depth of excavation does not exceed 10 fcet. 1he soil
units and the stability of cut slopes should bc verificd by a geotechnical engineer during
excavation.
The abovc recommended cut slopes arc under the assumption tha, groundwater scepage would
not be encountered during construction. If groundwater seepage is encountered, the consWction
should be immediately halted and the slope stability re-evaluated. "fhe cut slopcs may have to be
Flattened und other measures taken to stabilize thc slopes. Surface runoff should not be allowed
to ilow uncontrolled ovcr the top of cut slopes. Cut slopes should be covered with plastic tarps,
as requireJ, to protect them fom erosion by stormwater.
STRUCI'URAL FILL
Structural fill is the fill that support strucWral or tratlic load. Structural fill should consist of
cican soils with particles not larger lhan four inches and should be frce of organic and other
deleterious substances. Swctanl fill should havc a moisturc content within one percent of its
optimum moislure content at the time oflacement. The optimum moisture content is the water
content in the soil that enable thc soil to be compacted to thc highcst dry density for a given
compaction eTort. Thc on-site cleun till soils may b: uscd for structural fill only under fair
weather conditions when thcir moisturc wntent can be contraUcd to near optimum moisture
content at the time of placement. Imported material to be used s structural fill, should be clean,
frcc-draining, granular soils containing no more than perceni by weight finer than the No. 200
sicve based on the fruction of the matcrial passing No. 4 sicvc, and should have individual
particics not largcr than fuur inchcs.
Lltl & ASSOCIATES, INC.
