stopped to detertninc thc cause of thc movement and to establish thc type and extent of rcmedial measurcs
rcquired.
TEMPORARY DEWATERING
Perched groundwater was obscrved between about 12 and 23 feet below the ezisting ground surface. The
static groundwater level is located below the planned base of the excavation, based on the boring data,
site location, and thc naWrc of the soils at the sire.
For planning puoses, we mcommend the contractor plan to use sumps and pumps located within the
excavation for iemporary dewatering. IC nccessary, a 6- to 12-inch-thick granular working pad consisting
of crushed rock, quarry spalls, or the contractor's preferred material can be ased if
groundwater/stortnwater needs to be managcd throughout the interior oC the site.
SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS
We recommend that convcntional sprcad footings be a minimum oC 36 inches wide and that continuous
wall footings bc a minimwn of 18 inchcs widc. Extcrior footings should be foundcd a minimum of
I8 inches bclow thc lowcst adjaccnt gradc. Intcrior footings should be founded a minimum of 12 inches
bclow top otslab.
Shallow sprcad footings may be foundcd on structural fill, glacially consolidated soils, or on a layer af
crushed rock overlying thesc soils. A higher bearing pressurc can be achieved whcrc footings are
founded on densc to vcry dcnsc outwash, glacial till, or on crushed rock ovttlyins these soils.
Recommcnded bcaring pressures (or varying sitc conditions arc presented bclow.
We expect that a portion of thc footings will necd to extcnd through exis[ing fill ro comperent glacial soils
or be founded on slructural fill (particularly in thc central site arca whcrc the approximate 20-foot deep
sewer pipe is located). Irootings bcaring on swcwral fill soils (fill placed or compacted in place to the
minimwn standard) may bc proportioncd using an allowablc bcaring valuc of 4,000 psf. Whcre foundcd
on undisturbcd mcdium dense to dense outwash dcposits (typically cncountered at Elevation 107 fect),
sprcad footings may be proportioned using an allowable bcaring valuc of 6,000 psf. Deep (ootings
founded mi undisturbcd glacial till (anticipatcd below Elcvation 100 to 103 fcet) may be proportioned
using an allowable bearing •aluc of 10,(N10 psC All existing fill must bc rcmoved from bclow planned
foundalions.
EsBmaMd Settlement
Wc cstimare that thc sctticmcnt of continuous strip and isolatcd coiumn footings will be on thc ordcr of
'/s to '/. inchcs. Thc scldements should occur rapidly after applying load to the footings due to the
granular nature of the bearing soils. Wc estimate differcntial scnlcmcnt between comparably
loadcd footings foundcd on similar soil will bc on thc ordcr of onc-half thc lotal scnlemcnt. Additional
ditTercntial settlement may occur betwecn footings supporiing diffcrcnt loads or between footings
undcrlain by dilTcrcnt subgradc soils.
Thc allowablc bcaring valucs prescntcd above apply to the total of dcad and long-tcrtn live loads
cxclusic of Ihc wcight of the footing and any ovedying backfill. An increase in thcse values of one-third
may bc uscd whcn coiuidcringaind or scismic loading.
Flkn. l?u:-nnl-on Pogc 10 G[OENcN[Els
lunr/._'00.1'
y
