Washington
4.3 Structural Fill
00-02-20
Surfaces to receive structural fill should be graded to a level, flat plain — rolled and compacted to a non -
yielding condition prior to placement of fill. Slopes receiving fill that are over 5A(H: j should be
benched for preparation of fill placement. Benches should consist of no higher than four-(4) foot cuts on
the upslope side and should be wide enough to allow for the passage of construction equipment such as
dozers and compactors. We recommend that the prepared surface be approved as suitable by GES,Inc.
prior to the placement of any structural fill.
For most locations, on -site soil will not be suitable for use as fill and/or structural fill. Fill/structural fill
should consist of well graded, free draining imported granular soil tree of organic and debris. GES, Inc.
recommends utilizing imported gravel borrow or imported 1-1/2" minus etushed rock as structural fill/ fill
on this site. The materials for gravel borrow spelled out in WSDOT Standard Specification section 9-
03.14, Grave/ Boti-oty, will meet the requirements except that the gradation should be as follows:
Sicre:-Siyt PtGei%tijl¢, ,,, _
4 inch
100
i; inch
25 to 75
No. 40
S';fo 25
No. 200
0 to 5
Structural fill should be placed in maximum eight-(S) inch loose, horizontal lifts rolled to a non -yielding
condition, compacted to an uniform density of at least 95% of the modified proctor dry density (ASTM
U-1557) value. 1-1/2" minus crushed rock should be placed in maximum 12" loose, horizontal lifts that
are compacted to a non-vielding condition utilizing a roller or similar compactive equipment. Fill within
five-(5) feet of site improvements, such as backfill of building foundations, should be placed using hand
held vibratory plates oijutnning jack hand held compaction equipment.
Periodic testing of all structural fill as it is being placed is recommended to ensure uniformity of
placement and to help limit differential settlement potentials within the fill. The amount of testing and the
timing of the testing should be discussed with and approved by GES, Inc. prior to the placement of any
9 GES, Inc.
