Gcotechnical Engincering Evaluation
Mukiltco Boulcvard Devclopmcnt
Gvcrctt, Washington
March 31, 2003
NGA Pilc No. 366503
Pagc 9
slruchres or property lines, shoring systems may be utilized to protect the planned r•' -. If loose soils or
ground water seepage are encountered, tlatter inclinations may be necessary. Wc ,:ommend thnt cut
slopcs be protected t}om crosion. Mcasures taken may include covering cut slopes with plastic sheeting
and divcrting surfacc runoff away Gom thc top of cut slopc s. We do not recommend vertical slopes for
cuts dceper than 4 fect if workcr acccss is neccssary. We recommcnd that cut slope heights and
inclinntions confonn to WISIIA/OSFIA standards.
Final slopc inclinations for structural fill and the native soils should be no stecper thnn 2H:1 V. Lightly
compacted fills or common fills should be no stecper than 3H:1V. Common fills arc defincd as fill
material with or without some organics that arc "trackrolled" into place. Thcy would not meet thc
compaction spccification of strucwral fill. Pinal slopes should be planted with vegetation and covcred
with straw or jute netting. Tlie vegctation should be maintained until it is established.
Structural Fill
Gencral: Pill placed bencatl thc foundations, pavcmcnt, sidewalks, or othcr sctdcmcnt-scnsitive
stnctures shoidd bc placcd as structural fill. Structural fill, by dcfinition, is placcd in accordancc with
prcscribcd mcthods and stnndards and is monitorcd by an esperienced geotechnical professional or soils
technician. icld monitoring proccdures ould includc the perfonnance of a reprcsentative number of in-
place deusity tests to document thc attainment of thc desired degree of relative compaction. Tlic area to
receice the fill should be preparcd as oudined in the Site Preparation anJ Grading subsection of this
rcport.
Mnteriuls: lmportcd structural fill should consist of a good quality, granular soil, frcc of organics and
othcr dcleterious matcrial and be wcll-gradcd ro a maimum sizc of about 3 inchcs. Imported, all-wcather
fill should contain no more than about fiec percent fincs (soil finer than U.S. No. 200 sieve, based on that
faction passing thc U.S. 3/4-inch sicvc).
Thc use of on-site soils as stnctural fill will bc dependent on moislure content control. Some drying of
tlie soils may be necessary in ordcr ro achicve compaction. During wami, sunm days this could be
accomplished by spreading the material in thin lilis over a large arca. Some neration and/or addition of
NELSON GEOTECHNICAL ASSOCIATES, INC.
