The Project Engineer may order or approve
the Contractor's request to change asphalt binder content a
maximum oi 0.3 percent from the approved JMF. No fieid
adjustments of the JMF relative to the asphalt binder conleri
exceeding 0.3 percent irom the initial JMF will be made without the
approvai of the Materials Engineer.
D. Commercial HMA Acceptance. The contractor shall submit a certification that the mix
design submitted meets the requirements of Proportions of Materials. VerificaGon of
the mix design by the Contracting Agency is not required. The Project Engineer will
detertnine anti-strip requirements for the HMA.
4. Hot Mix Asphalt Mixture
A. Sampling
A sample will not be obtained (rom either th first or last 25 lons of mix produced
in each production shifl.
2. Samples (or compliance of gradation and asphalt binder content will be obtained
on a random basis from the hauling vehicle. The Contractor shall provide
adequate platfortns to enable samples to be obtained in accordance with
WAoTC FOP for AASHTO T 168. The platlorms shall ailow the sample to be
taken wilhout the Engineer entering the hauling vehicle.
B. Definition ot Sampling Lot and Sublot. For the purpose of acceptance sampling and
testing, a Iot is defined as lhe total quantity oi material or work produced for each job
mix formula (JMF), placed and represented by randomly selected samples tesled for
acceptance. All of the test results obtained irom the acceptance samples shail be
evaluated collectively and shall constitute a lot. Only one lot per JMF will be expected
to occur. The JMF (Job Mix Formula) is defined in Basis of Acceptance.
The Contractor may request a change in the JMF. If the request is approved, ali of the
material produced up to the time of the change will be evaluated on the basis of
available tests and a new lot will begin. The quantity represented by each sample will
constitule a sublot. Sampling and testing for statistical evaluation shall be performed
on a random basis at lhe irequency of one sample per sublot, with a minimum of
five sublots per ctass of HMA. Sublot size shall be detertnined to the nearest 100 tons
to provide not less than five uniform sized sublots, based on proposal quantities, with
a maximum sublot size of 800 tons.
Sampling and testing for nonstatistical evaluation shall be performed on a random
basis at a minimum frequency of one sample for each sublot oi 400 tons or each
day's production, whichever is least. When proposal ouantities exceed 1,200 tons for
a class of HMA under nonstatistical evaluation, sublot size shall be determined to the
nearest 100 tons to provide not less than three uniform sized sublots, based on
proposal quantities, with a maximum sublot size of 800 tons.
