i <br /> , <br /> I <br /> , 1 Timber Pile Removal <br /> 2 The timber piling shall be removed using a vibratory extractor as the preferred <br /> i 3 method. Piles shall be removed with a force that is coaxial with the vertical axis of <br /> 4 the pile. Piles shall be removed one at a time. Concurrent multiple pile removal is <br /> 5 not allowed, unless done in different locations with different equipment. Pile <br /> � 6 removal using force which is not coincident with the vertical axis of the pile, is not <br /> 7 allowed unless the pile breaks within 4 feet of the mudline. <br /> 8 <br /> � 9 Piling that break below the mudlirn; or are already broken below the mudiine may be <br /> 10 left in place. In those circumstances where it is not possible to extract piling either <br /> 11 with a vibratory hammer, crane or clamshell, the piling shall be cut off below the <br /> � 12 mudline. The clamshell operation shall cause minimum disturbance to the <br /> 13 sediments. <br /> ' 14 <br /> 15 Debris shall be contained during all removal operations and disposed offsite. This <br /> ! 16 containment shall be done under the provisions o( the approved Demolition Plan <br /> � 17 noted above. <br /> 18 <br /> � 19 Control Methods <br /> 20 Containment Boom: An oil containment boom shall be employed during all in water <br /> 21 piling removal activities. The boom shall encircle the areas where piling are being <br /> t 22 removed as well as the barge. This boom shall also serve to collect any floating <br /> i 23 debris. Oil absorbent materials shall be employed if visible product is observed. <br /> 24 The booms shall remain in place until all oily material and floating debris has been <br /> r 25 collected and the sheens have dissipated. <br /> i 26 <br /> 27 Absortrent Pads: The Contractor shall maintain a supply of oil absorbent pads on <br /> � 28 the barge to be employed if visible contamination, beyond routine sheens as <br /> 29 determined by the Engineer, is observed. <br /> 30 <br /> 31 Debris Netting: Debris netting shali be available and immediately used to collect <br /> � 32 and remove floating material or debris during all demolition and removal activities. <br /> � 33 <br /> 34 Piling, broken stubs, and associated sediments (if any) shall be contained on a <br /> � 35 barge or in an upland area above Mean Higher High Water. The storage area shall <br /> 36 include of a row of hay or straw bales, or filter fabric, placed around the perimeter to <br /> 37 allow for dewatering o( the sediments and run-ofi from piles.
