i
1 MIXING. The dry cement shouid be thoroughly field mixed with the loosened
2 subgrade soils and then compacted.
3
! 4 LACING. The mixture shall be transported to the job site in suitable vehicles
5 ard shall be deposited on the moistened subbase in uniform layers by means of
I 6 approved mechanical spreaders. Not more than 60 minutes shall elapse
r 7 between the start of moist mixing and the start of compaction of the
8 cement-treated mixture an the prepared subgrade.
1 9
10 COMPACTION. Immediately upon completion of the spreading operations, the
11 mixture shall be thoroughly compacted through the use of a vibralory compactor.
12 The number, type, and weight of rollers shali be sufficient to compact the mixture
, 13 to the reruired density.
1 14
15 The field density of the compacted mixture shall be at least 95 percent of the
16 maximum density of laboratory specimens prepared from samples of the
17 cement-treated base materiai taken from the material in place. The in-place field
18 density shall be determined in accordance with ASTM D 1557.
1 ,9
20 LAYER THICKNESS. The maximum depth of a compacted layer shall be 6
21 inches except where that total depth oF the compacted base course is required to
22 be greater than 6 inches no layer shall be in excess of 8 inches or less than 4
23 inches when compacted. In multilayer construction, the surface of the
24 compacted material shall be kept moist until covered with the next layer.
25 Successive layers shall be placed and compacted so that the required total depth
26 of the base course is completed the same day.
27
28 FINISHING. Finishing operations shall be completed during daylight hours, and
29 the completed base course shall conform to the required lines, grades, and cross
30 section. Ii necessary, the surface shall be lightly scarified to eliminate any
31 imprints made by the compacting or shaping equipment. The surface shall then
32 be recompacted to the required density.
 33
34 The compaction and finishing operations shall be completed within 2 hours of the
35 time water is added to the mixture and shall produce a smooth, dense surface
36 that is free of surface checking, ridges, or loose material.
37
38 SURFACE TOLERANCE. The finished surface shall not vary more than 1.0 inch
( 39 when tested with a 16-foot straightedge applied parallel with, or at right angles to,
40 the centerline of the stabilized area. Any deviation in excess of this amount shall
41 be corrected by the Contractor at the Contractor's expense.
42
43 CONSTRUCTION JOINTS. At the end of each day's construction, a transverse
44 construction joint shall be formed by a header or by cutting back into the
45 compacted material to form a true vertical face free of loose material.
46
47 Measurement
48 Sectian 4-03.4:
49 Cement lreated base will be measured by the square yard.
50
Port of Evcretl FAWAT-OY039
Sateilite RaIllBarge Transfer Facility Final Port Revlew DraR
Phase 7:Pler Construction 46 15 March 2005
