I
I

I 1 the mixer unit. The thermometer location shall be convenient and
2 safe for access by inspectors.
3
I 4 The plant shall also be equipped with an approved dial-scale
5 thermometer, a mercury actuated thermometer, an electrc pyrometer,
F or another approved thermometric instrument placed al the discharge
7 chute of the drier to automatically register or indicate the temperature
a of the heated aggregates. This device shall be in full view of the plant
9 operator.
 10
11 3 Sampling and Testing of Mineral Materials. The HMA plant shall be
1Z equipped with a mechanical sampler for the sampling of the mineral
i 13 materials. The mechanical sampler shall meei the requirements of
14 Section1-05.6 for crushing and screening operation.
15
16 The contractor shall provide sucient space as required for the setup
17 and operation of the (ield testing facifties of the Contracting Agency.
18
i 19 5-04.3(2) Hauling Equipment
1 20 Trucks used for hauling HMA shall have tight, clean, smooth metal beds and
21 shall have a cover of canvas or other suitaile material of sucient size to
22 protect ths mixture from adverse weather. 1Jhenever the weather conditions
23 inciude (or are forecast to include) during the workshift precipitation or an air
24 temperature less than 45°F, the canvas cover shall be securely attached :
I 25 protect the HMA.
26
27 In order to prevent the HMA mixture from adhering to the hauling equipment,
28 truck beds are to be sprayed with an environmentally benign release agent.
I 29 Excess release agent shall be drained prior to filling hauling equipment with
30 HMA. Petroleum derivatives or o,;ier coating materials that contaminate or
31 alter the characteristics of ihe HMA shall not be used. For hopper trucks, the
f 32 conveyer shall be in operation during the process of applying the release agent.
' 33
34 5-04.3(3) Hot Mix Asphalt Pavers
35 HMA pavers shall be self-contained, power-propelled units, provided with an
36 internally-heated vibratory screed or strike-off assembly and shall be capabie of
37 spreading and finishing courses of HMA plant mix material in lane widths
1 38 required by the paving section shown in the Plans.
39
40 The screed or strike-off assembly shall effectivefy produce a finished surface of
41 the required evenness and texture without tearing, shoving, segregating, or
42 gouging the mixture. Extensions will be allowed provided they produce the
43 same results, including ride, density, and surface te:ture as obtained by the
44 primary screed or strike off assembly. Extensions without, augers, vibration and
J 45 heated screeds shall not be used in the traveied way.
 46
47 When laying HMA, the paver shall be operated at a unifortn fonvard speed
48 consistent with the plant production rate and roller train capacity to result in a
49 continuous operation. The auger speed and flight gate opening shall be
50 adjusted to coordinale with the operation.
t 51
 Port ot Everett FAWAT-03-030
Satellite RalllBar9e Transfer Facllily Final Port Review Droft
i Phase t:Pier Constuctlen 50 15 March 2005
