WASHINGTON
SPOKANE, WA 99210 98201
FIRE OEPARiMENT
Dear Mr. Ruehl:
Following our meeting on December 16, 1982, I have reviewed the jail advisory
guidelines and considered the fire protection alternatives to the omission
of sprinkler heads in the jail cells
Providing wet standpipes, hose and nozzles is an acceptable alternative. The
standpipe installations should be made in accordance with NFPA Standard No.
14. This will provide for the hose connections on each floor, not more than
100 feet of hose that will reach to within 30 feet of all portions of each
story of the building and the listed and approved shutoff nozzles.
I have also done some research on the question of smoke evacuation and the
recommended air changes per hour. The information seems to be quite limited -
Chapter 4 and Appendix C of NFPA Standard No. 90A provides some information
on smoke control utilizing air conditioning and ventilating systems, but
everything seems to say that toe should hire an HVAC engineer to design the
totE.l :y;ter^ to suit the !-recific building and occ-?arcy.
I will complete the review of the sprinkler plans early next week. I will
mark on those plans the proposed location for the t•Iet standpipes on each level.
The,, arc prclininary plans and HNTB may wish to redo the platys and show tiro
standpipes to scale.
Please call if you have any other questions.
S;Incyrely'
Walter H.
