Nortli Coast Construction Compaty W-1260-30
, FeUruary G, 1975 Page 'I'vo
, 3. Comments on foundation design and its suitability to existing
soil coiditions,
, 4. Estimates of any settlement that may occur due to foundation
or floor slab loads.
FILD XPLORATION
Tle subsurface suil conditions vere explored by drilling four test
, Uorings, one near eacli building corner, to depths of 9 to 10 feet belov the
Uottom of the excavated footin trenches which were excavated to about 6
to 9 feet below fihe adjacent grade. The borings vere drilled using a port-
, able, ninuteman drill.
Li each boring, Standard Penetration Tests vere performed at
selected intervals. The Standard Penetration Test consists of driving a
2-inch O. D, split spoon sampler 18 iiiches with a 140-pound hammer free
falling a distance of 30 inches. The number of blows required to drive the
sampler the last 12 inches is termed the '5tandard Penetration Resistance"
(N) and is an approximate measure of the in situ relative density or con-
sistency of a soil. These resistance values (N)are plotted on the right side
of the borii .logs. Samples retained in the split spoon vere visually classi-
fied in the field, placed in airtight containers and returned to our laboratory
for further classification and testing. Also, undisiurbed samples of silt
and clay were taken using a 3-inch O. D. ring sampler.
Our field investigations were continuously monitored by an engineer-
ing geologist from our office who classified the soils encountereci and
maintained a log of borings which ire presented in Plates 1 through 4.
Lboraiory test results are given in Plates 5 through 8.
SIT CONDITIONS
The site is bowded on the west hy Rucker Avenue and on the north
by 43rd Street. An alley parallels tlie east side of tlie property, and an
existing building is present on the south end of tlie site,
From the original ground surFace, loose silty sand fi11 ehtended
from 6 0 9 feet in deptli. Underlying the fill is about a one-foot layer ot
natural to,soil. SuUsurtace conditions at tle bottom ot the escavations con-
sisted of indium dense silty sand.
