Page 3
Mr. and Mrs. Darrel Freudenburg
result of continuing saturation of loose fill material
which had been placed on a sloping natural ground
surface. According to the report, the fill slope may
continue to slough and yield in a downward direction
over a period of many years regardless of any erosion of
the toe of the fill or the natural soils. The report
further concludes that the portions of the property
BOE//VG characterized by steep, natural slopes have had a
history of instability. Slope failures and surface
creep form the mechanism by which the Powder Mill Gulch
was formed. The report indicates such movements may be
expected to continue and could at some time in the
future become critical.
t B. Landau Associated Report dated May 10, 1984 -
Engineer Consultation - Residence of Mr. and
Mrs. Darrel Freudenburg
According to this report - prepared at your request -
slides on the property to the east of the creek have
I occurred for a great number of years and probably extend
back to prehistoric time. The soil closer to the creek
bed and probably underlying the house includes
interglacial soil deposits frequently associated with
j slides in the Puget Sound region. Some of the
preliminary conclusions in this report are as follows:
1. Erosion by Powder Mill Gulch Creek has probably
I contributed to the slumping of the soil between
? the house and the creek.
2. Some of the slumping that has occurred has
probably caused partial diversion of the creek
to the west, where it would be more prone to
undercut land between the house and the creak.
3. Earth slides and slumping to the east of the
creek include both recent and prehistoric
movement.
Much of the earth movement may be attributable to spring
activity, although undercutting contributes to erosion
and slumping. This report recommends that immediate
steps be taken to stabilize the bank adjacent to the
house in order to prevent loss of the structure. The
report also recommends that surface water from
downspouts or other sources not be permitted to
discharge on or above the slope..
