D. Where a firm foundation is not encountered at ihe grode established, due to <br /> soft, spongy, or other unstable soil, such unstable soil under the pipe and for <br /> a width of at least one diameter on each side of ihe pipe shc ll be removed to <br /> ihe depih directed by the Special Inspector and replace-J with gravel or <br /> other suitoble selected material properly compacted to provide adequate <br /> support for the pipe. <br /> 3.02 BACKFILL <br /> A. Bockfilling shall be carefully done in such a monner as not to disturb or <br /> damage the installation. Not until pipe joints have set, piping has been <br /> tested, and the installation has been inspected and approved, shall irenches <br /> be backfilled. Backfill shall start as soon after e��proval as possible to avoid <br /> damage to finished wc,rl�. If finished work is damaged prior to ond during <br /> bockfilling opera+ions, such work shall be replaced or repaired and retested <br /> before backfilling is continued. <br /> B. The backfill from ihe bottom of p�pe to the horizo�tal diameter shall be <br /> made with brdding material. From the horizontal diameter of the pipe to a <br /> point one fooi above the top of pipe, bu::kfill shall be made with approved <br /> backfill material. <br /> C of iheepp'e9smultaneously ineap�roximately�6rinchlayersla d thotoughly <br /> compacted. <br /> p. Bockfill material froin one foot above the top of pipe to grade shall be <br /> carried up in even loyers not to erceed 12 inches in loose thickness, except <br /> layers in the top 2 feet shall not exceed 6 inches in loose thickness. Each <br /> layer shall be ihoroughly compacted with mechonical tampers to 95% <br /> campaction. <br /> E. Take special care to compact the backfill �nder services where ihey shall <br /> enter bui!dings and manl�oles to prevent selfling. The Coniractor shall be <br /> fully responsible for any damages to piping or property as a result of settling <br /> around service lines. Water cannot be used for compaction without written <br /> approval of the Speciallnspector. <br /> 3.03 SHORING AIJD PUMPING <br /> A. AII excavations shall be shored and braced by suitable methods and <br /> materials to preveni danger to persons or structures or injurio�s caving and <br /> erosion. Excavations shall be maintained free of water until pipe is bedded <br /> and anchored.
