1 1
2 5-04.3(4)A Crack Sealing
I3 5-04.3(4)A1 General
4 When the Proposal includes a pay item for crack sealing, seal all cracks 1/4
5 inch in width and greater.
I 6
7 Cleaning: Ensure that cracks are thoroughly clean, dry and free of all
8 loose and foreign material when filling with crack sealant material. Use a
I
9 hot compressed air lance to dry and warm the pavement surfaces within
10 the crack immediately prior to filling a crack with the sealant material. Do
11 not overheat pavement. Do not use direct flame dryers. Routing cracks is
I 12 not required.
13
14 Sand Slurry: For cracks that are to be filled with sand slurry, thoroughly
15 mix the components and pour the mixture into the cracks until full. Add
16 additional CSS-1 emulsified asphalt to the sand slurry as needed for
17 workability to ensure the mixture will completely fill the crack. Strike off
18 the sand slurry flush with the existing pavement surface and allow the
I19 mixture to cure. Top off cracks that were not completely filled with
20 additional sand slurry. Do not place the HMA overlay until the slurry has
21 fully cured.
I 22
23 Hot Poured Sealant: For cracks that are to be filled with hot poured
24 sealant, apply the material in accordance with these requirements and the
I 25 manufacturer's recommendations. Furnish a Type 1 Working Drawing of
26 the manufacturer's recommendations to the Engineer prior to the start of
27 work, including the manufacturer's recommended heating time and
28 temperatures, allowable storage time and temperatures after initial
29 heating, allowable reheating criteria, and application temperature range.
30 Confine hot poured sealant material within the crack. Clean any overflow
I 31 of sealant from the pavement surface. If, in the opinion of the Engineer,
32 the Contractor's method of sealing the cracks with hot poured sealant
33 results in an excessive amount of material on the pavement surface, stop
34 and correct the operation to eliminate the excess material.
I35
36 5-04.3(4)A2 Crack Sealing Areas Prior to Paving
37 In areas where HMA will be placed, use sand slurry to fill the cracks.
I 38
39 5-04.3(4)A3 Crack Sealing Areas Not to be Paved
40 In areas where HMA will not be placed, fill the cracks as follows:
I 41
42 1. Cracks 1/4 inch to 1 inch in width - fill with hot poured sealant.
43
I 44 2. Cracks greater than 1 inch in width —fill with sand slurry.
45
46 5-04.3(4)B Soil Residual Herbicide
I 47
48 Where shown in the Plans, apply one application of an approved soil residual
herbicide. Comply with Section 8-02.3(3)B. Complete paving within 48 hours of
49 applying the herbicide.
50
I
51 Use herbicide registered with the Washington State Department of Agriculture
52 for use under pavement. Before use, obtain the Engineer's approval of the
I
AMENDMENTS TO THE 2016 STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS BOOK
Revised: 8/1/16
