On December 16, 1980 at 2:45 p.m. I nC to Glm 6 51st Sts. in Gverett
where neighbors hzve made complaints in regard to the operati.or. of a
saw mill.
The mill is located behind several residential units on the southwest
corner of Elm & Slst.
I stopped in front of one house on Slst, tur.ned the engine off and
opened the windows of the car. I could hear a saw in operation and
the sound of another machine operating that made a lvud banging sound.
I then drove into the area of the mill. I saw a truck loaded with
logs that had been cut to approximately 3 feet in length. The truck
was backed up to a building that was recentLy built for stora9e.
In October of this year, Mr. George Swimm obtained a building permit
to construct the above mentioned storage shed. The permit (N8375)
had stated that the construction was a 16' x 20' storage shed.
I parked my vehicle on the north cide of. the shed and walked around
to where the truck was parked. I could hear the loud banging sound
coming fran the shed. As I approached the area I saw George Swimm
inside the building working a hacker. The hacker is used for splitting
logs and making shin9le shakes. Attached to the hacker was a conveyor
belt that extended out the door on the south end of the bu.ildin; the
conveyor was loaded with shakes. The only other thing I noted in the
shed at the time were pieces of scrap wood lying about the floor. The
building gave no appearance of a storage shed and was used to house
a major function of the mi11 operation.
I could not see the building that housed the saw wiich I had seen on
previous visits to the mill. The truck parked at the shed was between
me and the saw building, but I could hear the saw in operation.
Z approached George Swimm and this, in part, was f:he conversation:
Me: George, what are you doing? You know you're not supposed to
be doing any oi this out here.
George: It's my hobby and I don't operate it very much.
Me: Hobby or not, you are not to operate the mill for any reason.
You are ir. the wrong zone for this type of work. You have to
stop; you can't keep it going.
George: didnit have the $80OOO1fortotmovl cansttget thatUmachnoutuof
this property here.
z
0

...
c
m
F1 M

11 ""
N 2
0
m
co
m
-i c
O 3
m
S --1
m
.o z
c
a --i
rx
.. .

n
- m
m .-

m
C N
m `"
z c
.i m
a

—i
x

z
c
—

m
