GcotechniCal Engineering Report
51 17 23rd Ave W
 lanuary 2, 2009
RMI File No. 50909
Pagc
Por planning purposes, we recommend lhat temporary cuts in the soils be no steeper than I Horizontal to
I Vertical (IH: I V). If ground water were encountered, we would expect that flatter inclinations would
be necessary.
This information is provided solcly for the benefit of the owner anJ other design consultants and
should oot be construed to imply that RMI ASSOCIATES LLC assumes responeibility for job site
safety. The on-site contractor is the entity solely responsible for job site safety.
We recommend that cut slopes be protected from erosion. Measures taken may include covering cut
slopes with plestic sheeting and diverting surface runofl away from the top of cut slopes. H/e do not
recommend vertical slopes for cuts deeper than 4 feet, if worker access is necessary. We recommend that
cut slope heights and inclinations confortn to WISHA/OSHA standards.
Structural Fill
Gencral: All fill placed beneath buildings, pavements or other settlement-sensitive features should be
placed as structurnl fill. For Ihe purpose of this report, structurel fill is defined ns material that is placed
in accordance with prescribed methods and standards. and is monitored by an experienced geotechnical
professional or soils technician. Pield monitoring proc„dures would inelude the performance of a
rcpresentutrve numb:r of in-place density tests te document the attainment of the desired degree of
relative compaction.
Mterials: Imported structural fill should consist of a good quality, free-draiiing granular soil, free of
organics and othr dcleterious material, and be well graded to a maximum size of about 3 inches.
Imported, all-weather fill should meet these requirements, and also should contain no more then about 5
peroent fines(soil passing a U.S. No. 200 Sieve), based on that fraction passing the U.S. 3/4-inch sieve.
Fill Plecemenk Following subgrade preparation, placement of the structural fill may procee,i. All fill
should be pinccd in G- to 8-inch thick unifonn lifts, and each lift should be sprez;i evenly and be
thoroughly compacted prior to placement of subsequent lifts. All structural fill uderlying building areas
should bc compacted to at least 95 perccnt of its ma:imum dry density. hiaKimum dry density, in this
report, refers to that dersity as determined by the ASTM D 1557 compaction test procedure. The
moisture content of the soils to be complcted should be within about 2 percent of optimum, so that a
readily compactable condition exists, It may be necessary to overexcavate and remove wet soils in cases
where drying to a compactable condition is not felsible. All compaction should be aa omplished by
equipment cf a type and size sufficient to attain the desired degree ofcompaction.
RMI ASSOCIATES LLC II !,,
,(l
