Novack Property 99-11-10
510 Place
Everett, Wo.
The suitability of soil for structural fill use depends primarily on the gradation and
moisture in the soil when it is placed. As the amount of fines (that portion passing
the U.S. No. 200 sieve) increases, soil becomes increasingly sensitive to small
changes in moisture content and adequate compaction becomes more difficult or
impossible to achieve. Soil containing more than about 5 percent fines by weight,
cannot be consistently compacted to a firm, dense, non -yielding condition if the
moisture is more than a few percent above the optimum moisture content. Structural
fill should consist of a predominantly free draining granular soil, free of organics and
other deleterious material, with a maximum individual particle size no greater than 4
inches in maximum dimension. Structural fill should contain no more than 5 percent
by weight passing the No. 200 sieve, when measured on the minus No. 4 sieve
fraction. A soil of this gradation may be successfully compacted under a wider
range of weather conditions.
The silty soils found on this site generally will not be acceptable for use as structural
fill except during the dryer periods of the year. Even during the dryer periods of the
year, the on -site soils should be considered marginal for use as structural fill. No
materials containing organics or wood debris should be used as structural fill. If
imported structural fill is needed, it should meet the requirements for Gravel
Borrow spelled out in section 9-03.14 of the WSDOT Standard Specifications,
except that the gradation should be as follows:
11 GES, Inc.
