In the truck areas of the parking lots; all the above is the same only have
the asphalt be 5 inches N.A.
Beneath the bus parking and travelling areas; the original design does not
change except the entire 12 inches of crushed rock should be base course.
Lateral Loading from Poles
Based on the strength characteristics of the soil beneath the upper 18 to 24 inch layer, it is
recommended that the lowest strength soil in the WSDOT system be used for designing
the light poles. This is the 1000 psf approach.
Flower Bed Drainage
I3oth subsurface data and the onsite observations (see photo #3 in Appendix A) indicate
that the drainage downward is very low. Therefore, we recommend that the drains be
installed in the base of the large flowerbed areas.
Bridge Fill/Downdra * It, ssue
We understand that the new earth fill will be 10 feet in height, approximately 50 feet in
width and it shall be placed approximately 10 feet laterally from an existing pipeline.
This amount of fill creates a downward loading at its base of approximately 1200 pounds
per square foot. According to the Westergaard/Boussinesq stress distribution analysis,
approximately 50% of the. vertical load will influence the soil around the adjacent pipe.
'File loading, when compared to the consolidation curves should result in approximately
1.2 inches of settlement in the soils at the pipe. The resulting settlement should be an
even curve with the maximum amount at the point where the fill is the highest.
As shown in Appendix D, the pore pressure dissipation test does indicate that the pore
pressures do decline in a relatively short period of time. As a result, the settlement from
the bridge fill placement should take place in a week or two and then be stable. If the
placement or installation of the pipeline could be delayed till after the settlement has
occurred, then only minor settlement would occur in the pipeline.
Closure
We have also sent two copies of the report to Inca Engineers in Bellevue.
We appreciate this opportunity to be of service to you and would be please to discuss the
contents of this report or other aspects of the project with you at your convenience.
Milbor-Pita & Associates, Inc,
Frank Pita, P.E., P.G.
Geotechnical Project Manager
Gooleclmical, Tunnel and Environmental Engineers
3080 12S°i Aee NE 1'Lone (425) 869-5778
Bellevue, WA 98005 Pop 4 Fax (425) 861-0677
