CASCADE GEOTECHNICAL
March 9, 1989
Job No. 892-22G
Gustavson Construction
Page 3
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The uncontrcled fill anc] peat observed throur;!:out the north half
of the site is not normally useable as a roadway subgrade.
Unacceptable settlement and distress to the pavement surface would
be expected if the roadway were placed on the existing subgrade.
In order to eliminate the possibliity of roadway settlement and
distress due to the uncontrolled fill and peat, the unsuitable
material should be removed and replaced with structural fill.
Based on our telephone conversation with thc owner/developer Bill
Gustavson, we understand that the road will be private. We under-
stand that the owner/developer aill accept the risk of roadway
settlement and distress and will place the road over the peat
rather than removing the unauitable soil and replacing it with
structural fill. Therefore, we are providing recommendations
which are intended to reduce roadway settlement and distress rather
than eliminate it.
It appears that the south end of the roadway and the cul-de-sac
will be placed on firm nonorganic soil, and no special
procedures will be required; however, recommendations for
construction are provided.
Subarade Preparation
I We recommend that the portion of the roadway to be placed over
the uncontrolled fill and peat be drained of standinq water,
I stripped of vegetation then proof rolled with a heavy vehicle such
as a loaded dump truck. Soft areas observed during proof rolling
should be dug out and replaced with structural fill. We recommend
Ileaving the uncontrolled fill otherwise undisturbed. We recommend
