Conifer Apartments Septembcr 4, 1976 Page Two
extreme southern end of the western building.
Based on our previous aiork it was evident that the southern
ends of the to-o southern buildings were constructed on fill overlyin9
soft compressible soil. The perimeters of the buildings, with the
exception of the 1972 addition, apparently are supported on driven piles
vhile the addition and the interiors of thc buildin9s are supported on
spread footings supported in the fill. A great deal of settlement has
occurred and there s evidence of repeated shimming and shoring of the
foundations. 41e understand that the building interiors havic experenced
crackng and distortion of doors and windois which has been periodically
repaired. The addition at the southern end of the icstern building
has settled >d pulled aay from tL•c buildin9.
It was our opinion that settlement rould continue for a number
of years. 4;e recommended a detailed investigation of the subsurface
eonditions as DdS75 for underpinnin9 iecorinendtinn,.
EXPLORA7ION AlU TCSTfG
We exploi•ed subsurface conditions by drillin five boi•inqs usinq
truck mounted power auger equipment. Two probings were made b,y hand ju,t
cast of the apartment complex, and two borin9s were drilled by hand in
a modarately steep grassy section ihich could not be conveniently reaci !
by the truck mounted equipment. A total of 154.5' •ias drilled. The
locations of the explorations are shown on the Plot Plan. The maximurn
deth drilled tvas 39 feet.
The borin9s were located and continuously onitr,ed by a rnrr-
sentative f our firm who examined and classifie.: Le soil, observ '
drillin9 behavior and groundwater levels, obtained samples represcn'.
tive of the soils and kept a log of the explorations. The soils :r
identified anddescribed in accordance with the unified system •rhicli i,
described on Plate 2 of this report. Tlie boring logs, modificd to
reflect the results of laboratory testing of the samples, arc presented
n Plates 3 throu9h 9. The probin9 results are indicated on tF.e Plot
Plan. 4Jith the pover equipment, a 140 poimd wei9ht falliny 30 inches was
Y
